Jon Laaser is the new Voice of the Hokies. Laaser brings a lot of experience in play-by-play in multiple sports, and should be a good fit in the Hokie Nation.

Currently Laaser (pronounced Laser, as in Laser Beam) serves as the Director of Broadcasting for the Richmond Flying Squirrels, the Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. In that role, he is the play by play guy for all 142 games, and he is also the host and writer for the Flying Squirrels’ bi-weekly television show.

Laaser is also the voice of VCU Rams men’s basketball on Comcast SportsNet, and also the Voice of Verizon Wireless Arena for VCU women’s basketball games. He also serves as a frequent Sports Radio 910 (Richmond) radio host, as well as a co-host of “The Wes McElroy Show” in Richmond.

His minor league baseball experience is extensive: Montgomery Biscuits (AA – Tampa Bay Rays), Myrtle Beach Pelicans (A+ – Atlanta Braves), Altoona Curve (AA – Pittsburgh Pirates), Yakima Bears (A- – Arizona Diamondbacks), St. Paul Saints (Independent) and St. Cloud River Bats (Summer Collegiate). He has also been the Voice of Charleston Southern football and men’s basketball.

Laaser is originally from Minnesota, where he got his start with KFAN in Minneapolis.  You can get a feel for his ability to host a television show by watching the video below.

  1. Has a decent radio voice and a nice resume. Talks intelligently. Don’t have a feel for his personality but I’m sure Burnop will loosen him up. Welcome to the Hokie Nation Mr. Laaser.

  2. I’m not very happy about this, perhaps I’m in the minority on this one. I live in Richmond and have heard him on the radio countless times. When he steps in for Wes on the local radio show, I usually don’t listen to him. Sortof ‘diarrhea of the mouth’ syndrome and seems to have trouble speaking with impact by highlighting key nuggets of information or interesting perspectives. Hopefully it will be okay, but I won’t be listening to the radio while watching games on TV like I did with Roth.

    1. I have a friend here in Richmond, a pretty influential Hokies who spoke on his behalf to the powers that be in Blacksburg. He said he knows him well and says he is a first class, great guy who will bring MUCH passion to his job with the Hokies, and will work extremely well with Mike B.

When the guy told me the other day he thought Laaser was going to be the choice, he told me that nobody was Bill Roth, and you hate to have to replace Bill…but that Jon Laaser was a great choice, and one he felt good about…I know this guy very well and told him..that was good enough for me!

I am happy and look forward to the Laaser Era!

  3. Youtube has him calling a game against Belmont. I like his voice. Just me, but more commentary than play calling in this game.

  4. CC small detail but Wes McElroy’s show on 910 is a morning show in Richmond. Used to be in the afternoons.

    1. How do you figure “in state”? He’s in Virginia now but he’s been doing his job in 7 or 8 different states. Maybe he’ll bring some of that VCU basketball success with him.
