Bill Roth called his final Virginia Tech football game on Saturday.  The following link takes you to an audio clip of the final 3:14 of Saturday’s radio broadcast.  Roth and Burnop share their feelings, and Roth signs off for the final time as the Voice of the Hokies.

  1. Ouch, couldn’t believe Mike compared Bill’s departure to Logan Thomas getting knocked out by UCLA in the Sun Bowl. Have to admit I feel the SAME way… kinda like they just beat us again. But that’s probably not what Bill wanted to hear at that moment. Oh well. He was speaking from the heart and I guess he captured how I felt about it too. It’s been great all these years being able to tune in and still hear those guys together on the air. A great connection to the past that’s now gone forever. Very sad. Wish he could’ve stayed around another 27 years. He’s young enough. Damn Bruins!!

If you have second thoughts Bill we’ll fire whoever your replacement is to get you back!!!

Seriously though, best wishes to the Best Voice in the business. By far! We were so fortunate to have you for so long and will miss you for many years to come!

    “TOUCHDOWN TECH!!!!”

    1. I thought the ending was a little awkward: the whole point of the prepared presentation was to get it down cleanly and in fact, thought that Burnop started doing the goodbyes then and there but Roth kinda waved him off. Having done the video clip I would have loved a very simple ending like it was just another game or a “Good luck buddy, keep in touch” “I will, I will.” You could hear (or not hear really) Roth not say anything for a few seconds while he collected his thoughts and I suspect the pro in him would have wanted to avoid that. Burnop got himself in trouble there reaching for a UCLA reference (alluding to what a gut punch it was? or projecting they might meet again in another bowl game at different tables?) and kept digging himself deeper instead of bailing.

Anyway, No big deal, just awarding style points which are worth nothing
