  1. I’m in the ” we need wins” camp. Wake is my choice. Perfect would be UVA with the proper division realignment.

  2. Much ado about nothing. Lobby our new AD for conference realignment if you want to accomplish something and not just play “ain’t it awful”

  3. There should have been a “Anyone but Fredo or Orange Blob, and I would have selected that choice. While Wake doesn’t have that much appeal for a yearly match up, it does have one thing going for it. The away game is a good one to tailgate for over the entire weekend.

  4. For me, a rival should be the one or two games that you really get amped for year in and year out. For me that would be Miami and UVA. Otherwise this whole discussion is about the best crossover opponent and in that case I would go with Clemson or NC State.

  5. Will, I totally agree with you! I’ve been saying for years I’m sick of playing BC. In a 15 Team Conference we should play 9 Conference games without a constant rival. If you don’t play your rival that year you can plan them in a non-conference game

  6. I voted CLEMSON as VT’s cross division rival. Next I would go with NCST or LOUISVILLE.
I just think a closer cross division would be much better for our fans in travel, and it would build a more traditional rivalry for all great HOKIE fans.

  7. 1. Clemson
    2. Lew-uh-vul
    3. FSU (only because they’re FSU, frankly I think NC State would make for a better rival)
    4. NC State
    5. BC

after that… what difference does it really make?

  8. I decided to blow up the divisions. I ranked each school in the conference based on a 1-4 grade, 1 is best, 4 worst. Clemson and FSU were the only 1’s then 4 each of 2-4. Split up each grade evenly.

    clemson1 gt2
    mia2 fsu1
    vt2 lou2
    duke3 unc3
    ncst3 pit3
    bc4 syr 4
    uva4 wf4

This was easier than anticipated as it really just resulted in swapping NCSU for UNC and Clemson for GT. Then reassigning a few rivals to where they make sense.

    Div A – Div B
    BC-Syracuse
    Clemson-Georgia Tech
    Duke-UNC
    Miami-FSU
    NCSU-WF
    UVA-Pitt
    VT-Louisville

I originally had UVA-WF as crossovers but the tobacco schools should be crossovers.

  9. FSU because our program needs to learn how to beat a superior opponent. Not that I am a fan of Bobby Bowden but he built the FSU program by agreeing to play any team any time anywhere. They were a weak sister back in the old Southern Conference days but taking on any high profile opponent without insisting on a home and home is how they built their rep as a giant killer.

    1. FSU was never in the Southern Conference
Tech tried that type of scheduling without FSU athletes and got killed. See 1989-90

I don’t disagree……just get ready for the results

  10. I vote for none of the above because I believe VT’s crossover rival should be UVA. Personally, I don’t care which VA school ends up in the Atlantic or Coastal. If the division realignment is well thought out and can easily incorporate future expansion, then it could involve moving more than 2 teams between the divisions.

  11. Went with Louisville simply because it is possible. Clemson/GT not likely to change nor is Duke/Wake, NCSU/UNC, FSU/Miami so of the remaining Louisville seems to be the most interesting and they are closer to VT than anyone else remaining.

  12. I voted for NC State but would be very happy with Clemson. BC is awful because they sell very few of their ticket allotment. If we are really good then our fans will buy up the tickets but if we a mediocre like last few years we probably lose 4000 X 50 = $200,000. Watch how many State fans show up this year.

  14. I picked based on a city I like to visit, thus, Boston is fine. Second choice would’ve been NCSt because it’s an easy drive.

If your reason not to pick BC is because you’re tired of losing to them there is a solution, win! Also, Clemson, FSU & Louisville aren’t going to be easier wins then BC in most years.

    1. I think most people just feel ‘meh’ about BC football in general, it’s not because they are tired of losing to them. if that were the case, no one would be voting for UL, Clem, or FSU either.

      1. Yep, majority of the time it’s just ugly, unexciting football. But just like the bitter taste of losing to them, the ugliness of the games could be fixed by playing better and winning!

      2. Yeah. I always referred to BC as Milquetoast University. Bland. Boring. Meh.

  15. The answer is Clemson, because they are one of the teams that stand between us and the ACC Championship. Plus land grants etc.

  16. Voted NCState but Clemson was my other favorite. Too bad we couldn’t have Notre Dame as our cross divisional rival and play them home and away every year!!!!

  17. We need marquee home games to sell season tickets. Clemson is best from an economic perspective. Georgia Tech would scream bloody murder though.

  18. NC State (unc) and Wake (Duke) are never going to happen. Do not want FSU or Clemson; too many L’s. We need W’s. THerefore I choose the Cuse.

  19. I voted for Clemson but would be fine with NC State, too. Louisville a distant third. No care about FSU, but a definite no to BC, Cuse, and Wake.

  20. I voted for Clemson, but I would like to rotate playing teams from the other division. The permanent “Cross division rival” is BS. We know who our rival is. Don’t make one up for us.

    1. I voted for Wake. I know it will never happen because of their ties to the carolina mafia, but they are our closest ACC opponent and because, as someone else said “we need wins, not losses”. Hpopefully, last year was an outlier… If it wasn’t, well then we really do need Wake as our x-over opponent

  21. Would like to see the ACC discontinue the entire notion of the cross-over rival. Play the six division games, then have two cross division teams rotate in and out, instead of one. Better yet, go to nine league games and have three rotate. VT might actually see Clemson more than once per century.

      1. UVA should be VT’s crossover rival. However, I have a feeling that VT would move to Atlantic because the ACC will want to preserve the continuation of the “South’s Oldest Rivalry” (aka UVA-UNC game). If UVA moved to the Atlantic, then the game couldn’t continue to be played annually with VT giving up its annual game with VT and UNC giving up its annual game with NC State.

If VT were to switch to the Atlantic (in exchange for BC), then I would look for the ACC to make 2 more swaps (i.e. FSU for Miami and possibly L’ville for Pitt). Clemson and GT can’t swap because of Clemson’s rivalry with NC State (aka the Textile Bowl). If Clemson were to swap then NC State would have to swap too and that isn’t happening because of UNC’s rivalry with Duke and UVA. The reason I suggested L’ville for Pitt is because of Pitt’s rivalry with Syracuse. Pitt can still play Syracuse annually as a divisional foe instead of crossover foe. Regardless I division will have 3 marquee names and the other will have 2 marquee names (choices between Clemson, FSU, L’ville, Miami, and VT). I am assuming that if Notre Dame ever joins as a full member, then it would be placed in the division with 2 marquee names to balance things out.

  22. Travel to BC and Syracuse limits the number of fans who will attend and hinders our recruiting. Plus their stadiums are awful places to play.

  23. I voted for N.C. State out of my own bias, more or less. Makes sense for me since I work at State. 🙂 Clemson would be ok.

  24. Is there an “anyone but BC” option? Sick and tired of losing to those guys and/or playing them too close for comfort

    1. Exactly – EVERYONE or ANYONE but BC – they are a worst case scenario.
      1 – I don’t care
2 – BC is never good
      3 – Boston is far
      4 – Their fans don’t care
      5 – Boston is cold
      6 – BC is soooo lame…
7 – Uniform colors? I’m out of ideas but there are more to be had…
