Fuller earns First Team All-ACC honors from media

Several Hokies earned All-ACC honors by the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association (ACSMA).

CB Kendall Fuller: First team, 119 votes
DE Dadi Nicolas: Second team, 101 votes
DE Ken Ekanem: Third team, 40 votes
DT Corey Marshall: Third team, 41 votes
TE Bucky Hodges: Third team, 38 votes

Several other Tech players earned Honorable Mention honors…

WR Isaiah Ford: 24 votes
DT Luther Maddy: 33 votes

Dadi Nicolas was not named First Team, losing out to FSU defensive end Mario Edwards.  Edwards had 11 tackles for loss and three sacks, while Nicolas had 17.5 tackles for loss and nine sacks.  In fact, Ken Ekanem had 13.5 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks, but only made third team.

The other odd pick was Luther Maddy making Honorable Mention.  Maddy played in just four games and had 0.5 TFL, yet earned 33 votes by the writers.

It will be interesting to see how the media’s team compares to the coaches’ team.

  1. Looks like the journalist who vote on these players don’t really research anything. Have sports media guys and gals become more like the general media?

  2. Nigel Williams also was received honorable mention. Think about that DL next year. We return 5 all conf performers. And a first team corner to get picks because of the pressure applied by the DL.

    DE-Dadi-2nd team
    DT-Marshall-3rd team
    DT-Maddy-Honorable mention
    DE-Ekanem-3rd team

DT-Nigel-Honorable, not bad having a back-up DT that is all conference. If we can improve our LB play, and find guys that can replace our safeties we should be even better next year on Def. Replacing Bonner and Jarrett will be key, we need players that are good against the run and pass. Our main liability (if you can call it that) will be size on defense, leaving us a little susceptible to running attacks. We gave up big running games this year to Duke and Pitt, but I think that was mainly due to injuries to Maddy and Chase.

  3. so the media honored 50 athletes in the ACC with first or second team honors- and two were Hokies. Hmmm.

    1. That’s not unreasonable for a 6-6 team in a 14 team league. UVA had 5 second teamers, 4 on D and the kicker. VT had a lot of Freshmen contribute, some of the better ones for only half a season. I’d anticipate better representation on the preseason teams next summer/spring/post-bowl/tomorrow.

  4. That Mario Edwards made it over those 2 DEs from Tech is insulting. And how is Bucky Hodges a third teamer?
