Time: 7pm

After falling to Northern Iowa last night, Virginia Tech will take on Miami (OH) in the Cancun Challenge tonight.  Tipoff is scheduled for 7pm on CBS Sports Network.

Like the Hokies, Miami (OH) is 2-2 on the season.  They defeated Southern Utah 76-63 to open the season before falling to Evansville 69-50.  They went on to beat Liberty by 11 (VT beat the Flames by 10), and then fell to Northwestern 55-46 last night in Cancun.

Here’s a look at the Redhawk starting lineup…

G Eric Washington (5-10, 175, Jr.): 9.7 points, 5.3 assists”
G Will Sullivan (6-3, 190, Sr.): 14 points, 3.3 rebounds
G Geovanie McKnight (6-3, 182, Jr.): 13.3 points, 2.7 rebounds
F Chris Bryant (6-8, 200, Jr.): 4.7 points, 3.7 rebounds
F LJ Livingston, Jr. (6-10, 190, Jr.): 7.3 points, 4 rebounds

All three of those guards play over 32 minutes per game, while guard Willie Moore (6-3, 198, Jr.) comes off the bench to play 18.3 minutes.  Moore is a former VT recruiting target who originally signed with Oregon.

The Redhawks play a lot of guards, and overall they don’t present the size matchup issues that many other teams have against the Hokies.  They also don’t have much depth, as only three bench players average 10 minutes per game.

Still, the Redhawks play mostly juniors and one senior, and they certainly hold the experience edge against Tech, as most teams will this season.  Considering that Miami played Northwestern tough last night, and the fact that their margin of victory over Liberty was nearly the same as Tech’s, I expect we’ll see a very competitive game tonight.

  1. Didn’t Buzz have 4 guards on the court at one time? So we might see 3 or 4 guards playing on each side? Might be oddly interest, or just lots of passing.
