Three In-State Stars Set To Visit VT

Three highly recruited in-state seniors headline the list of expected visitors for Virginia Tech’s season opener against William & Mary. All three will be in Blacksburg on unofficial visits.

Hopewell (VA) defensive end Darrell Taylor has had Virginia Tech high on his list throughout his recruitment. Florida, Ohio State, South Carolina and Tennessee round out the 6’4”, 227-pound senior’s top five (he is still considering others as well) according to Hopewell head coach Ricky Irby, who updated the latest on the big-time athlete in this August 21 update on TSL.

Tomorrow will be Taylor’s first regular season game experience at Virginia Tech. As of now, he wants to take all five official visits before he commits. Of the schools in his top five, the only ones he has yet to see in person are Florida and South Carolina.

While Taylor has had the Hokies high on his list throughout, Hylton (Woodbridge, VA) offensive lineman Matthew Burrell and Stonewall Jackson (Manassas, VA) defensive tackle Tim Settle appeared set to head out-of-state to play their college ball.

Burrell, a consensus 4-star recruit, tweeted a top 15 in June. Neither Virginia Tech nor Virginia made that list, which included Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Iowa, LSU, Michigan, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Penn State, South Carolina, Texas and Texas A&M.

The 6’5”, 290-pound lineman would later indicate that he is giving Virginia another look, and now he reportedly will be in Blacksburg tomorrow to further explore Virginia Tech. Burrell attended Tech’s Junior Day last February and seemingly came away highly impressed, tweeting at the time: “Tennessee is next but I LOVED tech! #HOKIENATION”.

Settle, a 6’3”, 310-pound senior, tweeted an in-order Top 15 back in May. Virginia Tech was no. 7 on that list, but the entire top five consisted of out-of-state schools (Tennessee was no. 1 followed by Alabama, Clemson, Florida State and Texas.).

For the past several months, the indication was that Settle was leaning heavily toward leaving the state. It’s certainly a positive for Virginia Tech to get the talented defensive tackle back on campus. Like Burrell he has spoken highly of previous visits to Tech, so we’ll see if the Hokies can make up some ground this weekend.

More FB Recruiting Notes

– Point guard Justin Robinson, one of Buzz Williams’ top class of 2015 basketball targets, is taking an official visit to Virginia Tech this weekend according to our own basketball recruiting guru, Rev. Zeke.

– Per Twitter, two of Tech’s early top class of 2016 targets will be in Lane Stadium tomorrow. L.C. Bird (Chesterfield, VA) athlete Jalen Elliott and Stonewall Jackson (Manassas, VA) RB/DB Reggie Floyd have both been offered by the Hokies. Elliott is no stranger to Blacksburg, as he has visited numerous times with his parents, who are both Tech graduates.

– A couple of targets have come off the board this week. North Carolina defensive lineman Darian Roseboro committed to Michigan today, while Thomas Dale (Chester, VA) defensive tackle Darvin Taylor II pledged to Florida State last night.

    1. We need to sign both of these guys Settle and Burrell.. Along with Mr. Sweat “Go Hokies”

      1. and Darrell Taylor think about how great our D would be with those four gentlemen.

        1. Burrell is an Olineman, Sweat has visted many times and is coming in for the GT game I think. Settle will have qualifying issues most likely, so we’ll have to re-recruit him if he does commit if that is the case. Taylor is going to be a good one and mos feel he’s VT’s to lose.
