Hokies blown out by UVA

UVA closed the first half on a 21-6 run and defeated Virginia Tech 65-45 in Charlottesville on Saturday afternoon.  The Hoos improved to 15-5 overall and 6-1 in the ACC, while the Hokies dropped to 8-11 and 1-6 in conference play.

Freshman point guard Devin Wilson once again led the Hokies with 12 points.  He was just 2-of-8 from the field, but he managed to get to the basket and draw fouls, and he was 8-of-11 from the free throw line.  Wilson had just one assist, as Tech didn’t get many good looks at the basket.  When they did get a good look, they usually missed.

The Hokies were just 14-of-42 (33.3%) from the field and 3-of-18 (16.7%) from the three-point line.  Wilson was the only Tech player to reach double figures in scoring.  Joey van Zegeren, Jarell Eddie and C.J. Barksdale had seven points apiece, while Ben Emelogu added six points.  Eddie’s shooting struggles continued, as the senior forward went just 2-of-10 from the field and 1-of-7 from three-point range.

Emelogu made his return for the Hokies after missing the last two games with an ankle injury, though he was far from 100%.  Adam Smith remained out with his calf injury.  Malcolm Brogdon had 18 points for UVA, while Joe Harris added 12.

The Hokies have now lost six games in a row and eight of their last nine.  Their lone win in that span came against Maryland Eastern Shore.

Tech returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to Boston College to take on an Eagle squad that won 62-59 in Cassell Coliseum on January 11.  Tipoff is scheduled for 7pm, and the game will be televised by RSN.

    1. That was UVa win number 4 in a row HOKIE SEAN against the Hokies. They beat us in both meetings last year by 16 and 18 points. We manage to beat them once the year before by 2 points.

Regardless we can not turn into the basketball version of the UVa football program. This is getting out of hand.

  1. Am I the only one that feels really bad for JJ? Talk about a bag over the head kick in the balls! Hope he lands well after we fix this.

    1. I think he’ll get at least one more year after this one. Lord knows he should. He inherited a team that was woefully short on talent and he had a very short runway to try and put together a recruiting class for 2013. All things considered, I thought he and his staff did a very good job of that, signing Emelogou, Thompson, Wilson, Clark, Mueller, and Kirby.

But then he loses Clark and Mueller before the season even starts, leaving us very thin at the guard position. As if that weren’t bad enough, it seems like half the team that’s left has been either hurt or sick at any given point in time since about the 5th game of the season.

Put all that together, and it’s not hard to understand why we’re 8-11 overall and 1-6 in the ACC. But the underperformers haven’t been his recruits. For the most part, they’ve been the upperclassmen. i.e. Seth’s players. All in all, the three freshmen have played well.

JJ has also signed a very solid class for 2014 with Hudson, Bibbs and Lang, plus he’ll have both Mueller and Kirby available next year. So I think (hope) we should be significantly better next season.

Now if we’re not playing any better a year from now, then yes, I’d say that talk of a replacement for JJ would be justified. But the guy hasn’t had a fair chance yet.

  2. No worries – I’ve got this figured out. I’m going to submit a perfect bracket for the warren buffet backed challenge. Then I will take the $500 mill pay out (what retard wouldn’t? Annuities are for donkey brained idiots). Then I’ll pledge the new arena – stipulating the students own the floor on the camera side – no one is fired up by seeing old rednecks sitting on thier hands every play (Jesus Christ watch an MSU game). Additional endowment to keep 3k student tickets free – first come first serve.

    I like my odds.

  3. Shooting “usually missed”. I watched one three point bounce off the backboard, bounce off rim and go in, what a shot, hooray! Next shot was “from NBA range” except it was an air ball, missed the basket by at least a couple feet. By some miracle we were 50 50 on that exchange and “rallying”. Has it ever occurred to anybody that they ought to practice shooting? This is horrible.

  4. I gave up at half time. I just cheer for this team to lose by 10 pts or less. Anything else (like wins) is a waste. Are we still a team in the ACC? I changed to the senior bowl to watch LT get put on the ground. I hope the new AD gets Tech back on track. He has a lot of work to do.

  5. As a I said about Eddie’s 20 points (on poor shooting) the other night, that does that mean he had snapped out of his slump… Wilson is the only one who does not have a “Defined” shooting ability. Eddie and Johnston are only 3 point shooters NOW. The posts are only close to the basket types despite Barksdale’s recent efforts. Wilson will drive and now is shooting more from outside. He needs to because his drives are getting stuffed. Emelogu’s 6 points were 2 3-pointers….nothing from inside..
