Marshall to redshirt; Vandyke out for season

Virginia Tech junior defensive lineman Corey Marshall will take a redshirt season in 2013.  Marshall missed several weeks of camp in August dealing with a personal issue, and returned to practice just last week.

Thought he started at defensive end last year, Marshall was set to play defensive tackle this season.  However, Nigel Williams (r-Fr.) and Woody Baron (Fr.) have been playing well in his absence, and it has been decided that Marshall will redshirt this year.

He’ll be a r-junior in 2014, and a r-senior in 2015.

Vandyke done for the season

Following the lead of his brother, r-freshman mike linebacker Devin Vandyke has been lost for the season.  According to head athletic trainer Mike Goforth…

Devin Vandyke suffered a torn ACL in his left knee in the Western Carolina game and will miss the rest of the season. He is currently being evaluated and when the swelling in his knee goes down and he regains range of motion, he will have surgery locally. The timetable on a return is 6-8 months so he will be out for the spring, but should be fuller for the first summer session.”

Vandyke will join his brother on the injury list.  Ronny Vandyke has been out since August following a shoulder injury.

  1. Geez…what did we do to piss off the football Gods? Wasn’t having multiple years of horrendous offensive coaching punishment enough?!!!

    1. I would so it CAN’T, but I’d have said THAT 5 injuries ago! I have never heard of ANY team having this many injuries… We are down almost a third of our team! Unfreakingbelievable!!

    1. To be granted an extra year, I believe the rule-of-thumb is that you have to have missed 2 seasons due to injury.

      1. It’s a complicated world. Basically, if you haven’t taken a redshirt year already, then you can apply for and get a medical redshirt after a year in which you were active for less than (I think) 20% of your team’s snaps – i.e., if you get hurt early on. If Corey Marshall had played in the Bama game but not since, he could get one of these. Stanford got one last year. But since DVD already took a redshirt year, he can’t apply for another one yet. He’ll come back next year as a R-So. When he finishes his R-Sr year, he can apply for a sixth year at that time if he wants. Usually, though, I think the first redshirt has to be medically related for the second one to be given – if your first redshirt is for the usual developmental reasons, the NCAA isn’t in the habit of granting a sixth year of eligibility.

Long way of saying that DVD has probably lost a year to contribute.

  2. Well, I guess that’s good that Devin Vandyke will be “fuller” by the summer since Kyle Fuller is graduating.
