FRANK BEAMER OPENING STATEMENT

The Alabama game, what I said after the game is pretty accurate.  I thought our offensive line hung in there.  I thought Trey Edmunds…I think he’s going to be a special player.  We got to pick it up around Logan there.  Get some consistency, and I feel like its coming.  I feel like it’s a possibility.  I think it’s there; we just got to get it.  Defensively, I think we played one of the best defensive games we’ve ever played around here.  I thought we were really physical, flying to the ball, tackling some really good backs and really explosive wide receivers.  Did a good job of tackling, and feel good about that.  And then special teams, we went out yesterday practicing and spent extra time on our kickoff return and kickoff coverage and punt coverage.  We’re going to make a few changes there personnel wise.  I’m not going to get who’s doing what.  But we’re going to make a few changes there.  We’re going to make sure we’ve got our best possible people on the field.  So that’s that.  Looking at Western Carolina, they’re playing a lot of young guys just like we are.  It’s going to be a young ball game here this weekend.  [They] run the option offense, got two quarterbacks that are very athletic, and that’s a concern.  They run it different ways, so there’s a concern there.  It’s one of those games where we’ve got to get Virginia Tech better.  That’s what you always try to do early in the year, make sure you get yourself better regardless of who you’re playing.  We’ve got to improve; I always said you make the biggest improvement from game one to game two. That’s going to be our priority right now, is make sure we’re a better football team this week than last week.

HOW MANY DROPPED PASSES WERE THERE AGAINST BAMA?

We got that.  I’d rather not get into particulars.  We need to be more consistent catching the football.  We’re going to work hard this week throwing a lot of balls.  Guys have done it before.  We’ve seen those guys be positive players.  We’ve just got to get back to being a positive player now.

WERE YOU HAPPY WITH HOW LOGAN THREW THE BALL

Yeah, for the most part, even on the interception.  We had poor spacing, poor route, which caused the interception.  At the game we thought they did one thing, we thought they fooled us.  But really it’s us not executing and us not lining up correctly and us not running the correct route at the proper depth. Overall I thought Logan did a good job.  Some of his reads we’re going to have to work on that. His read progression, we’re going to work on that a little bit.  But overall Logan did OK.

CONCERNS ABOUT USING VETERANS ON SPECIAL TEAMS

You start out and you want to get guys that you feel like can get it done.  If you can take a veteran guy off the field, you’d like to do that.  It kind of becomes those plays, as we found out the other night, those plays can be such explosive plays.  I’ve always said you make good plays on special teams, it’s the quickest way to win a football game.  And if you don’t make good plays it’s the quickest way to lose a football game.  We need to get our best people out there.

WORRY ABOUT LOGAN’S CONFIDENCE

I think he’s a realistic guy, he understands what he did well and what he didn’t do well.  He’ll be better next week. And we just got to help him out in a better fashion.

WILL JOEL CALEB PLAY THIS WEEK

Yes.  Yes.  We’re hoping he and JC will both be back.

IMPORTANCE OF DEPTH AT RB

We’re going to let them all compete in there.  Quite honestly, I thought Mangus did a good job when he got in there the other night.  He ran hard and he’s a speed guy, a redshirt freshman.  He did OK when he got in there the other night.  I was impressed with how hard he ran.

WHAT WILL TREY EDMUNDS’ WORKLOAD GOING FORWARD

We’ll see.  Trey handled it fine.  One thing when you’ve got a good back you make sure you get him in to the flow of the game. Most of the time we’ve been good when we’ve had two good guys there that got the majority of the work. That way they stay in the flow of the game and stay rested, stay fresh. We’ll see how it goes this week. We’ll see how we practice this week.

ASSESSING THE DEFENSIVE LINE’S PLAY

I thought we played exceptionally well up front.  I thought we were very physical.  Flew to the football, a couple times we did miss that first tackle, but here comes two, three, four more. That’s the way you like to watch it on the video, a bunch of blurs going to the football.  I thought we did a great job of that.

ASSESSING THE OFFENSIVE TACKLES

I thought they did very well, for a first game for both of them. We gave up one sack and that was late in the game. I thought that we hung in there. I thought that they played physical in the run game. I see us getting better each and every week there. I thought it was a good start for that offensive line.

ON THE SPECIAL TEAMS MISCUES

On the kickoff return we had some broken tackles, had several missed tackles.  We had him and a couple of guys stopped.  They would have made the play after he broke out if they’d kept coming from the back side.  We’re out of position with our safeties, one of our safeties was out of position.  Would have been a ball at about the 30 yard line if he’d been in position.  Just a matter of doing it correctly. Then on the punt return had a couple guys too wide with their lanes. Our lane distribution was not correct.  So now there’s a hole in our coverage. That’s basically the whole thing. We gave it extra work yesterday.

  1. Thought Logan was better in mechanics. Trey’s performance was excellent!. I think that CFB has us back on track.

  2. Trey looks to me like one of those backs who thrives off a lot of carries. He’s young, strong, a workhorse, and the flow will make him better. I think Mangus is going to be special. Can’t put my finger on it but has an “it” factor to him. He obviously has speed but he also runs hard…bigger than he is. Interested to see what Caleb can do. I’m not concerned about running back at all, as long as they stay healthy. Hope we can get JC in space so he can do that voodoo he do so well.
