Erick Green broke Virginia Tech’s single season scoring record, but the Hokies still lost to Wake Forest 90-79 on Sunday afternoon in Winston-Salem. Tech finished 13-18 overall, 4-14 in the ACC, and they’ll be the #12 seed in the ACC Tournament. Wake finished the regular season 13-17 overall, and 6-12 in league play.
Erick Green scored 35 points for the Hokies. He was 9-of-18 from the field, 3-of-5 from three-point range, and 14-of-18 from the free throw line. It was two late free throws that gave Green 786 points this season, one ahead of the 785 points scored by Bimbo Coles during the 1989-90 season. Green has played in 31 games, while Coles also played in 31.
Marquis Rankin also added 15 points for the Hokies. He was 7-of-10 from the field, and showed and improved ability to finish around the basket. Jarell Eddie added 13 points, while Cadarian Raines scored eight.
Tech shot 49.1% from the field, and had a good offensive game overall. However, defense continued to be a struggle. Wake Forest shot 59.2% from the field, 56.3% from three-point range, and they had 21 assists on 29 made baskets.
Hokie defenders continued to struggle to be in the right spots on the court, and yet again they didn’t get through screens and close out on shooters. C.J. Harris scored a career-high 29 points on his Senior Day, and he made all six of his three-point attempts.
The Hokies will tip off at approximately 2:30pm on Thursday afternoon. They will take on the #5 seed, which will be either UVA or NC State. Update: Virginia earned the #4 seed with a win over Maryland Sunday night, so the Hokies will battle #5 seed NC State.

So do we hope that JJ and his assistants have learned from this season’s performance? On what front(s) was progress made?
EG proved it can be done with lots of hard work. I’m not sure why others didn’t appear to follow his example or show similar growth.

Yes, Rankin had a good day today. CJ has had some good days. Woods has had some good days. Others have had……say it with me…….”good days”. A good day now and then keeps our hopes up but, lets hope the good days happen a little more frequently after a year of JJ off season and time to work on team defense.
I think most players at the ACC level are capable of having “good days” on occasion. But the better players, like Erick Green, have them consistently. The biggest problem with this year’s team was/is inconsistency. Jarrell Eddie can go for 16 points one game and then totally disappear the next. Same with Cadarian Raines, Robert Brown, etc. It’s hard to win games that way.
I don’t know how you go about trying to improve consistency as a head coach, but JJ has his work cut out for him. Maybe some of the new guys coming in will prove to be more consistent from game to game.
Why do they always get scorched from from 3-point range?
Part of the reason is that we don’t always fight through screens well on the perimeter. Also, we don’t switch as well as we need to be doing. But the ACC has a lot of good shooters. If you give them an open three, there’s a good chance they’ll hit it. The bottom line is that we need more guys who can do that.
Rankin was a pleasant surprise today. We need him to carrie over to next season.
