Hokies Defeat Norfolk State 73-60

Virginia Tech got a great offensive performance from Jarell Eddie and another good game off the bench from Cadarian Raines in a 73-60 win over Norfolk State on Sunday in Blacksburg. The Hokies are now 7-3 on the season, while the Spartans dropped to 6-4.

Jarell Eddie, a sophomore wing from Charlotte, scored a career-high 24 points and pulled down seven rebounds. He was 6-of-9 from the floor, 5-of-6 from three-point range and a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line.

Cadarian Raines came off the bench to score 10 points and grab seven rebounds, including six offensive rebounds, in 23 minutes. He was matched up against Kyle O’Quinn, who averages a double-double and was the MEAC Defensive Player of the Year last season. O’Quinn had 14 points and eight rebounds in 29 minutes.

Despite O’Quinn’s presence, the Hokies outrebounded Norfolk State 36-28 and pulled down a whopping 16 offensive rebounds. Erick Green also pitched in with 12 points, four rebounds and three steals in the win.

As a team Tech shot just 42.4% from the field, but they were 7-of-15 (46.7%) from three-point range. The Hokies were also 16-of-20 from the free throw line, good for 80%.

Tech also protected the ball, committing just nine turnovers. Rebounding and turnovers have plagued the Hokies at times this year, but they were much better on Sunday.

The Hokies return to action next Saturday when they host Campbell. Tip-off is scheduled for 4pm, and the game will not be televised.
