Hokies Beat Golden Panthers 78-63

Virginia Tech got 31 points from Dorenzo Hudson and another double-double from Dorian Finney-Smith in a 78-63 victory over Florida International on Tuesday night in Cassell Coliseum. The Hokies are now 3-0 on the season, and they advanced to the semifinals of the NIT Season Tip-off where they will face Syracuse next Wednesday.

Dorenzo Hudson had a great shooting night, going 8-of-13 from the field, 3-of-5 from three-point range, and a perfect 12-of-12 from the free throw line. He also pulled down five rebounds in 34 minutes.

Dorian Finney-Smith, Tech’s freshman small forward, also played 34 minutes. He finished with 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting. He was 2-of-4 from three-point range and made both of his free throws. Finney-Smith once again flashed a well-rounded game, pulling down 10 rebounds to go with five assists and two steals.

Erick Green dropped in 12 points for the Hokies before re-aggravating his achilles injury. He left the game after playing 25 minutes. Victor Davila chipped in with 11 points, seven rebounds and three blocks.

The Hokies shot 51.9% from the field and 36.8% from three-point range. FIU managed just 35.1% from the field and 25% from the outside. Tech outrebounded the Golden Panthers 35-29, though the Hokies were sloppy at times with 16 turnovers on the night.

#5 Syracuse took care of Albany 98-74 on Tuesday night. The Hokies will face the Orange in Madison Square Garden next Wednesday night at either 7pm or 9pm. The game will be televised by ESPN2.
