Virginia Tech wrestling entered the final day of the NCAA Championships with a chance to secure the program’s first individual championship. And though the Hokies’ Jared Haught fell just short, Virginia Tech still secured the program’s sixth-straight top-10 finish in the sport’s finale, placing eighth.

Haught, one of the most decorated wrestlers in Virginia Tech history, faced off with NC State’s Michael Macchiavello in the final at 197 pounds, with Haught falling 3-1. Haught had defeated Macchiavello twice this season, but suffered a two-point takedown with about eleven seconds left to go for the loss. Haught, a redshirt senior, finishes his career at Virginia Tech as a three-time All-American and a two-time ACC Champion.

Virginia Tech sent nine wrestlers to the NCAA Championships this weekend, with three advancing to the semifinals and earning All-American honors. David McFadden (165 pounds) finished in fifth place while Zach Zavatsky (184 pounds) finished in sixth place. joining Haught as All-Americans. Both McFadden and Zavatsky return next season, as do fellow NCAA qualifiers Kyle Norstrem, Brent Moore, Ryan Blees, Hunter Bolen and Andrew Dunn.

We’ll have an interview with Virginia Tech head coach Tony Robie later this week and get his thoughts on his team’s performance and their future.

  1. Thanks for including the final team scores. I tried, unsuccessfully to get them from NCAA Wrestling.

  2. I am afraid I jinxed Mr. Haught. Haven’t watched Hokie wrestling ever and when I got back from a party Saturday night I flicked on the TV and his match was at end of the second round. I gave him back luck in the third.

    1. No, the announcer jinxed him before the match by saying that Haught had dominated the NCS guy twice during the ACC. I immediately said noooooo!

  3. Wow! Just wow, this could be a special team next year with all the returning talent. Do I dare get my hopes up for a National Championship?

    1. But VT does have a solid shot at an individual title and another ACC Championship next year! Please consider donating to SERTC tomorrow on VT Giving Day! (or any day)
