Virginia Tech women’s lacrosse, making its first NCAA Tournament appearance ever, beat Georgetown 13-10 to advance to the second round.
The Hokies fell behind 2-0 early, then outscored Georgetown 9-1 to jump out to a 9-3 halftime lead. Tech held on for the win, with Georgetown getting no closer than three goals the remainder of the game. The Hokies were led by Paige Petty with four goals.
Of the 27 teams in the tournament, only eight are seeded, and neither Virginia Tech nor Georgetown were seeded. The Hokies’ next opponent, North Carolina, is seeded No. 2 overall in the tournament.
While that sounds like a daunting task for the Hokies, Virginia Tech nearly beat UNC earlier this year, dropping a 13-12 decision on March 28. The Hokies led that match 12-11 but gave up two goals in the last two minutes to lose.
Carolina beat the Hokies again on April 27 by a more comfortable margin of 14-8.
