Charlotte, N.C. is about as central of a location as there is for the ACC, which is one of the reasons the conference is keeping it’s championship game in the Queen City through the 2030 season.

The ACC announced on Thursday that the conference had reached an agreement with the Charlotte Sports Foundation to keep the Dr. Pepper ACC Football Championship Game in Charlotte for another 10 seasons, adding onto the three years already remaining on the deal. The agreement means the ACC Championship Game will be held at Bank of America Stadium, home of the Carolina Panthers, for at least the next 13 years.

“Charlotte has been a tremendous home for the Dr. Pepper ACC Football Championship Game and we’re pleased to announce the Queen City as our championship destination through 2030,” said ACC Commissioner John Swofford in a statement.  “With the outstanding efforts by the Charlotte Sports Foundation, Carolina Panthers and city of Charlotte, our game has grown into one of the premier sporting events in the country. We look forward every year to this annual celebration of ACC Football.”

The ACC Championship has been held in Charlotte seven of the last eight seasons and in those seasons, the ACC has ranked second in attendance among all conferences for football championship games. The last seven championship games held in Charlotte have averaged more than 70,000 fans and last season, Bank of America Stadium was sold out for the showdown between No. 1 Clemson and No. 7 Miami last season.

  1. Can’t see why the ACC should lock into such a long term deal. I can’t imagine Charlotte wouldn’t jump at the chance to fill that stadium with college football fans annually for the championship game, so why lock it in until 2030?

  2. i have to view this seemingly good news with a large case of skepticism based on Swoffie’s track record of not making the wisest deals: ACC network crawling limply into existence at great expense to each member and as his son(i think) sits on a related media board; ignoring the uncheats and uloserville debacles; and continuing his partiality to all things tobacco road, among other on-going issues.
the devil will show-up in the details of this long-term contract and the ACC member universities will lose major money by not renegotiating every two or tree years!
i’ll bet there’s little benefit financially to the ACC below the normal lease rates – like clauses for a reduction in stadium lease prices, or a cap so lease prices do not soar and we’re committed to pay – for our guaranteeing 10 more years of bringing Charlotte large crowds every first week-end in December.
was there really anyone else or any conference trying to hold their championship game in Charlotte that weekend? the SEC? the 12? the B10g?
and standing beside the devil will be you-know-who – his personal wallet too fat to allow him to sit down.

lack of dynamic, integrous ACC leadership is a scandal that should register in the top five for 2008-2018, among the US governmental boon-doggles. wow!?!

    Go Hokies! persevere on, poorly.

  3. What about gender politics? Has North Carolina cleaned up its act, or just swept it under the carpet? Or do the bathrooms just smell better with a squirt of Glade or Fabreze or Chlorox? Bwahahaha!

  4. 1st positive news from Johnny Boy in quite some time. The Queen’s City is an excellent choice for a championship city for the ACC. Or as they say in Merriman it gives new meaning to: NC2VT!

    1. I think, in light of this, we may want to change that hashtag to #VT2NC
