Virginia Tech offensive lineman Kyle Chung plans to request a sixth year of eligibility, in hopes of returning next season, according to a Virginia Tech spokesman.

Mike Barber of the Richmond Times-Dispatch was the first to report the news.

Chung, a redshirt senior, has dealt with chronic injury issues throughout his career at Virginia Tech. Chung has had various shoulder injuries, starting in his true freshman season, and has finally been healthy this season. The veteran has started all 10 of Virginia Tech’s game this season, carving out a role at right tackle.

If Chung is granted another year, it would ease the exodus of experience that will take place after this season. Redshirt senior Wyatt Teller and senior Eric Gallo are slated to leave the program after the season, leaving two spots needing to be filled for the 2018 season.

  1. With all of his shoulder issues, I’ve lost track of things. How many seasons was he actually healthy enough to play?
