Bracket Experts Say Virginia Tech Will Make the NCAA Tournament

Virginia Tech’s loss to Notre Dame was gut-wrenching, but it didn’t do much damage to the Hokies’ NCAA Tournament projections.

Joe Lunardi of ESPN and Jerry Palm of CBS Sports both updated their bracketology sites this morning, incorporating Virginia Tech’s loss and a lot of other action from yesterday, and the Hokies barely budged.

Joe Lunardi has Virginia Tech as a 9-seed, playing 8-seed Missouri in Detroit. That’s a drop of one on the seeding line, from an eight to a nine, but still safely in.

Jerry Palm has Virginia Tech as an 8-seed playing 9-seed Middle Tennessee in Nashville. Palm had the Hokies as an 8-seed before the Notre Dame loss, so the Hokies didn’t drop in his bracket.

As of this writing, the aggregate site BracketMatrix.com had not been updated with Wednesday’s results, but the Hokies are listed as an average seed of  8.22 on that site, which compiles 96 brackets into one huge table. Virginia Tech was listed on all 96 brackets prior to last night’s loss.

Here’s a look at the 14 teams listed below Virginia Tech on BracketMatrix.com as of yesterday (average seeds 9-11):

  • Oklahoma (9): Lost to Oklahoma State Wednesday
  • NC State (9): Lost to Boston College Wednesday
  • Florida State (9): Lost to Louisville Wednesday
  • Butler (9): Still playing in the Big East Tournament
  • St. Bonaventure (10): Starts A-10 Tournament play Friday
  • Kansas State (10): Still playing the Big 12 Tournament
  • Arizona State (10): Lost in the PAC-12 Tournament Wednesday
  • Texas (10): Still playing the Big 12 Tournament
  • USC (11): Still playing the PAC-12 Tournament
  • St. Mary’s (11): Lost in the West Coast Tournament Monday
  • UCLA (11): Still playing the PAC-12 Tournament
  • Providence (11): Still playing the Big East Tournament
  • Alabama (11): Still playing the SEC Tournament
  • Baylor (11): Still playing the Big 12 Tournament

Virginia Tech may slide down to a 9-seed on BracketMatrix.com, but it’s very hard to see the Hokies falling below that line to a 10-seed or worse.

If you believe in bracketology, Virginia Tech is still safely in the NCAA Tournament.

The NCAA Selection Show is Sun., March 11 at 6 p.m. on TBS. Virginia Tech is hosting an NCAA Selection Show Watch Party in Cassell Coliseum, with doors opening at 5 p.m.

  1. I might prefer a 10 seed as long as we are in. I believe this team can do some real damage in the tournament so would be nice to not play 1seed in round 2.

  2. I really hope ND does not make dance they broke my heart and I very much want to return the favor and last night will be better for my bleeding ulcers

  3. I like the middle Tennessee match up. Mo is getting Porter back. Sound familiar?

  4. Whit knows people on the committee, he wouldn’t authorize a public watch party if there was ANY chance we’re out. I think he’s been told we’re in, just seeding and site assignments TBD
