Virginia Tech Basketball Recruiting: Three 2019 Recruits Decommit

All three members of Virginia Tech basketball’s 2019 recruiting class have decommitted from the Hokies, within the span of a single day.

Center BJ Mack (6-7, 250) out of Oak Hill (VA) via Charlotte (NC) Christian, and twin point guards Keyshaun Langley (6-0, 140) and Kobe Langley (6-1, 150) out of Southwest Guilford (High Point, NC) have all decommitted.

The Langleys are both 3-star recruits, per the 247Sports composite rankings. Mack has no ranking. All three players announced their commitments to Virginia Tech on September 22, 2016, and they have also announced their decommitments together, within 25 minutes of each other on Twitter.

First, Kobe Langley, at 12:01 PM on Twitter:

Followed closely by BJ Mack, at 12:02 PM on Twitter:

And a few minutes later by Keyshaun Langley at 12:25 PM on Twitter:

On the surface, the decommits sound alarming, but an article by Langston Wertz, Jr. of the Charlotte Observer reveals that Mack, his family, and Virginia Tech arrived at the decision together:

Mack’s father, Brian, told the Observer that both parties agreed to the decision and that his son was re-opening his recruitment.

In addition, basketball recruiting sources have told TechSideline.com that the decommitments shouldn’t be a source of concern.

  1. Let me be frank: if they have a so-so career somewhere else NP. If they burn the place up some place else then I would like to hear more than the Twitter link that was given – though I have learned to give Will and this publication the benefit of the doubt, I would have liked some opinions on what happened. Did they see all the Fresh starting at Tech these days and see they can’t beat them or did they see they don’t have the moxie to play in Buzz’s team or did we blow some kind of recruitment effort on three people all at the same time. One miss is not great concern, two I start to wonder, but three? There is more going on here and I would like to hear more or to be honest an explanation on why I cannot see that insight on this site.

  2. I am not worried. These guys probably saw how much they would have to work in Buzz’s system.

  3. Why isn’t this bigger news? Shouldn’t there be some concern that 3 players de-committed on the same day? I’m not sure I’ve ever seen this before.

  4. Is this a result of the trend of a two year commitment by students and not getting to play right away?
