We’re less than six weeks away from the start of the 2024-25 college basketball season and the ACC released its conference schedules on Tuesday.

Virginia Tech men’s basketball opens league play on Saturday, Dec. 7, in Cassell Coliseum vs. Pitt (2 p.m. ET, ESPNU), while the women kick things off with a tough road trip to Duke on Sunday, Dec. 8 (4 p.m. ET, ACC Network).

Let’s dive into the schedules.

Men’s Hoops: Home Three Of Four Saturdays In January

The Hokies released their non-conference schedule on July 18, which includes a neutral-site game vs. Penn State in Baltimore, two games in the Fort Myers Tip-Off and a road test at Saint Joseph’s in Philadelphia. They host Vanderbilt in the SEC/ACC Challenge, too.

Here is their complete schedule. Note that tip times and TV designations are subject to change.

Notes:

Tech opens league play vs. Pitt (Dec. 7) and at Duke (Dec. 31), the exact opposite of easing into things. Those two squads earned double byes in the ACC Tournament and were a combined 27-13 (.675) against conference foes in 2023-24.

Mike Young & Co. are part of the first pairing to play ACC games on the West Coast — and, just like football, the Hokies will be the very first game. They’ll face both California schools in one trip — Stanford on Wednesday, Jan. 8, and Cal on Saturday, Jan. 11. Virginia will be out there with Tech at the same time and will play the Cardinal on Wednesday and the Golden Bears on Saturday.

The Hokies didn’t have a single February home game on a Saturday last year. They’ve got one of those this season, which happens to be Virginia (Feb. 15), and they’re also in Cassell Coliseum for three of the four Saturdays in January — all with reasonable tip times, too.

Speaking of the Cavaliers, both Tech-UVa games will be on the weekend for the first time since 2014-15: in Charlottesville on Feb. 1 (4 p.m. ET, ACC Network) and in Blacksburg on Feb. 15 (2 p.m. ET, CW). That’s two meetings in as many weeks in a series where the home team has won the last seven times. These have been some of ESPN’s favorite games to stick in weeknight primetime slots in recent years, but not in 2024-25. Tech’s last Saturday game in John Paul Jones Arena was Jan. 4, 2020.

The Hokies have a stretch of three-plus weeks in January and February with five road games to just two at home, which includes trips to Tallahassee, Charlottesville, Notre Dame, Chestnut Hill and Coral Gables. They’ve got a favorable end to the year, though, with three straight contests in Cassell Coliseum before the season finale at Clemson.

Women’s Basketball: Tough Final Stretch

Virginia Tech announced its non-conference schedule on Aug. 27 ahead of the first year of the Megan Duffy era. The Ally Tipoff vs. Iowa, the Fort Myers Tip-Off and the SEC/ACC Challenge game at Georgia are highlights.

Notes:

Things look different this season because it’s an 18-team basketball conference now and pods no longer exist. The schedules should be more evenly distributed across the league as a result. The Hokies won’t see Duke, North Carolina and NC State twice a year anymore, though. The only team they’ll face more than once now is Virginia, a squad on the rise.

Tech is on the road for three of its first four league games at Duke, Miami and Georgia Tech with a home contest vs. Florida State squeezed in between. The Blue Devils are expected to be one of the ACC’s better squads this year, and though the Yellow Jackets have been middle of the pack for a few seasons and the Hurricanes have a new coach (Tricia Cullop), that’s a difficult start.

The script flips in January, though. The Hokies have a near four-week stretch with six contests in Cassell Coliseum to just two away from home — one of which is at NC State. It’s an extremely tough portion of the schedule that features Virginia, Louisville, Notre Dame and Syracuse, but a juiced-up arena could play a factor. Tech’s 11-1 all-time in front of a home crowd of 8,925-plus.

Unlike the men’s team, which has to go to California, the women host Stanford and Cal in 2024-25 — two teams it’s never played. The Hokies meet the Cardinal on Thursday, Feb. 20, before the Golden Bears come to Blacksburg on Sunday, Feb. 23. It’s flipped for UVa, who plays Cal on Thursday and Stanford on Sunday. That’s one of four East Coast trips for the new members.

It’ll mark the third consecutive year Tech’s ended the regular season with back-to-back road games. Boston College and Clemson — at least on paper — aren’t as tough as the previous two pairings, though. In February 2023, it was at No. 22 North Carolina — the Hokies escaped thanks to Elizabeth Kitley’s buzzer-beater — and Georgia Tech. Last year, they faced No. 17 Notre Dame, then the hottest team in the league, and UVa.

  1. So why is the women’s ACC/SEC challenge game against Georgia on the road this year? Didn’t they travel to LSU last year. Figured they’d get to host this year.

  2. “ They’ll face both California schools in one trip — Stanford on Wednesday, Jan. 8, and Cal on Saturday, Jan. 11. Virginia will be out there with Tech at the same time and will play the Cardinal on Wednesday and the Golden Bears on Saturday.”. I hope we get to play the 2nd game of those doubleheaders so the CA are tired from playing the Hoos first. 😉

  3. Looks like we don’t get the day with a women’s and men’s game in Cassell . It was great when you come from out of town to see both teams on the same day.

  4. This is the first year in a while that I have no expectations for either team this year. Is going .500 in conference play a reality for either team?

    1. Agree – almost completely different teams on the floor this year for both squads. I have zero idea how we will do.
