On Monday, Kate Sears committed to Megan Duffy and Virginia Tech.

A 5-foot-9 point guard from Boone, N.C., Sears was a NCBCA First Team All-State pick as a junior in 2023-24 after averaging 30.6 points, 11 rebounds and 6.6 assists per game in the postseason. A three-time conference player of the year at Watauga High School, she had a 38-point performance in the state semifinals.

Sears is the No. 2 overall prospect in the state, according to Prep Girls Hoops, who plays for Team Curry on the AAU circuit. She visited the Hokies in April after Duffy was hired and committed on Memorial Day. She held offers from Boston College, Clemson, James Madison, Kansas, Marquette, Michigan, Purdue and Wake Forest, among others.

Sears is the first class of 2025 pledge for the Hokies in the Duffy era. Virginia Tech currently has 11 scholarship players for the 2024-25 season. Here’s the program’s future scholarship breakdown:

  1. I see she had an offer from Marquette, too. Had Duffy already started the recruiting process with her before she left Marquette? It doesn’t matter since we got her but just curious. Since she is from NC, maybe she and Duffy were already talking but she didn’t want to go so far away. Then when Duffy came to Blacksburg, that sealed the deal since she would be so close to home. Does anyone know?

    1. she did mention she did not want any airplane trips so “close to home” mattered.

  2. Pure class! Way to recruit Megan!
Now who was this Brooks guy, who I have heard spoken about????

  3. Nice step back. Plays bigger than 5’9. Nice drive to the basket. Plays a lot like Amore

  4. Yes you will love being a Hokie and you will be loved because you have chosen to be a Hokie !! Let’s goooooooooo !!!!

  5. Welcome to Blacksburg and VT!! Come and see us for some games this fall and winter season!!!

  6. Welcome to Hokie Nation Kate!! You’re going to love playing in Blacksburg!! Can’t wait to see you play next year!! 🏀🏀

  7. David, do you mean we have 11 players for the upcoming 24-25 season? Do you expect any portal additions in the near term? Thanks.

    1. Yeah, I was thinking she would want to get two more experienced players, ie from the portal for this coming season but have no scuttlebutt on that.

  8. Big time commitment. Look for the Hokies to be a guard oriented, fast paced team; a much different look than the last few years…

    1. Much different look is a given, because we won’t have an All-American center to run the offence through.
