Virginia Tech Post-Spring Roster Odds And Ends From Brent Pry

If Virginia Tech had a football game today, Grant Wells would be the Hokies’ starter, but he wouldn’t be the only quarterback to get in the game, according to coach Brent Pry.

Tech obviously doesn’t have a game this month — its season opener against Old Dominion is 117 days away — but the Hokies’ quarterback battle right now remains close enough that a single player wouldn’t get all the snaps.

“I told those guys, if we played today, which we’re not, Grant would start and Kyron [Drones] would play,” Pry said last week. “But I think we’ve got two really good ones.”

Gaming out a hypothetical situation that won’t happen isn’t necessarily a sign that Pry is about to go to a two-quarterback system — even if this sounds a lot like what Justin Fuente said about Hendon Hooker and Braxton Burmeister prior to the 2020 season. Instead, it signals that Drones, who put up pedestrian numbers in the spring game behind a leaky second-team offensive line in what was one of the only publicly visible practices, is coming along.
