Andy Bitter Joins Tech Sideline

Andy Bitter
Andy Bitter, a 21-year sports writing veteran and winner of the 2022 Virginia Sportswriter of the Year award, is joining Tech Sideline as a full-time staff writer covering Virginia Tech football.

We are pleased to announce that highly regarded Virginia Tech football writer Andy Bitter is joining Tech Sideline as a full-time staff writer, effective immediately.

Bitter, winner of the 2022 Virginia Sportswriter of the Year award, has covered Virginia Tech since 2011, including stints at The Virginian-Pilot, The Roanoke Times, and most recently The Athletic. He is the most widely followed and respected writer exclusively covering the Hokies.

“We are beyond thrilled to have Andy Bitter join our talented team of writers and analysts,” Tech Sideline founder Will Stewart said. “We are pleased to offer a platform for Andy to continue sharing his work with Hokie fans who have come to rely on him for excellent, unfailing coverage of Virginia Tech football. A writer as talented and prolific as Andy deserves a venue for his work, and we’re glad we can provide that.”

Bitter’s work will begin to appear on Tech Sideline today, and he’ll join us for spring football coverage and beyond. His responsibilities for Tech Sideline will be the same as they’ve been for years at other publications: beat writing and features focusing on Virginia Tech football.

“I’m humbled and thrilled to be joining the team at Tech Sideline,” Bitter said. “Its coverage is as comprehensive as any outlet that follows Virginia Tech, and I’m eager to do my part in helping TSL grow its audience and solidify its place as the premier media outlet covering Hokies athletics.”

David Cunningham will continue to serve as Managing Editor for all sports covered by Tech Sideline, and he’ll also be our lead writer for men’s and women’s basketball and will continue to contribute to our football content. Chris Coleman will continue as our lead analyst and columnist for all sports, as well as recruiting. Everyone on our team, including Andy Bitter, will appear on our podcasts as well.

“Our goal has always been to be a one-stop shop for fans of Virginia Tech athletics,” Stewart noted. “The addition of Andy Bitter is another step towards providing that service for Hokie fans. We know that Virginia Tech fans everywhere will love this addition to Tech Sideline.”

  1. Awesome hire and so glad yall hired Andy. Cancelled my athletic subscription and signed up for TSL just like tons of other people!

  2. I am late to the party! Just now seeing all of this (been focused on my own work / career transition activities). Glad to see you on TSL and look forward to your great articles!

  3. Andy, we are so lucky to have you back (and were they out of their minds?) This is coming from someone who has also taken up writing albeit an an amateur hobbyist in my case. a “64 grad in Chemistry, I started writing a SciFi novel some years ago, thought I was done, and got friends to read it after which I’m going, Um…I don’t think so. So in my 70’s, I went back to school for Creative Writing, learned a lot, and am getting ready to maybe see if anybody’s interested. The point of this? I have learned what it takes to write and write well and appreciate it when I see it. I will be looking forward to your articles.

  4. Nndy has been the “Go-to” reporter for Hokie football for years. Glad to have him on board. But the b10//UW-Madison, that’s almost as bad as UNC-CH.

  5. Super talent and a super, strategic move by Will. Congrats to Andy and TSL. As for the subscription increase, IMO, it is a small increase compared to the value TSL fans will get from adding Andy Bitter to the TSL fold.

  6. Dropped Athletic the minute Andy was canned, picked up TSL the minute it was announced. Solid move all around.

  7. I have long admired TSL. I followed Andy to the Athletic from the Roanoke Times because I enjoyed his take on Hokie football. I canceled my subscription immediately when he was released and pleased to now be a member of TSL. Will I thought it was awesome when you hired Chris and now that you hired Andy I think it makes TSL far and away the best group of sportswriters covering Hokie sports. Well done!

  8. Congrats to TSL, Will and Chris and Andy B and family – great move on all parts IMHO. Cheers to you all!

  9. I just subscribed here and after I cancelled the Athletic about a month ago. Welcome to Andy!!

  10. Welcome aboard Andy! Almost had a subscription to The Athletic but opted out. Now playing know why my gut said that was the right decision then.

  11. Excellent hire! I am sure his expertise will be a Big Time Value Add for TSL and all subscribers!

  12. This is the best news I’ve had all month. Gladly dropped my Athletic subscription, and happy to pay a premium to follow AB on TSL. Andy is the BOMB! Great job Will.

  13. Just Signed Up For Monthly Subscription Big Fan Of Andy’s and Tech sideline Just Had to show my support! Looking forward to This addition to an already great group covering the Hokies 🦃

  14. I just signed up for a year of the Athletic yesterday….. And Andy was 2/3rds of the reason I read that site.

Oh well, I’ve never been so happy to be a lifetime member.

  15. Wonderful news!!! The Athletic’s stupidity is our gain! I cancelled my subscription there as soon as I saw they got rid of Andy! Welcome to TSL!!!

  16. Since I won’t be subscribing to The Athletic anymore (because Andy isn’t there), a modest price increase to TSL still saves me money! Win-win. Welcome aboard! This is HOME!

  17. Hokie Central just gets bigger and better. The good ol’ days were a great start – but this is really BIG time. Worth every $.

  18. Andy is outstanding, great hire and worth the extra $ (just don’t get carried away)!

  19. Nice steal Will !!!
Andy, welcome. Missed reading your content.
Gotta ask though…How did you get from Madison, WI to Danville ???

  20. Happy to pay more for this new talent addition and I think NY Times deserves many cancelations as well.

  21. Fantastic. Good for Andy, TSL and Hokie fans. I will really enjoy cancelling my The Athletic subscription.

  22. Was so disappointed when he was off the athletic. Didn’t expect him to land where u already had my other subscription. Perfect news.

  23. Outstanding! I’m a long-time TSL subscriber, but I had subscribed to The Athletic when Andy went there. I cancelled my subscription to The Athletic when he was let go. I’m very happy to see that he is with the premier site covering Virginia Tech athletics.

  24. Great addition. Andy is respected by all Hokie fans. Looking forward to his content.

  25. Amazing – great talent pickup Will! Very well done. And glad to see Andy landed on his feet!

  26. Great addition! I do wonder however how you’re going to keep all this talent from stepping on each other. I’m sure you will manage.

    1. It will be a learning process, that’s for sure, but we have talked extensively about that.

  27. What a great add to TSL – my already valuable subscription just became more so!

  28. Very glad to see Andy landed somewhere VT-focused! I’ve been mulling over subscribing to TSL since I canceled my subscription to The Athletic and this is what finally sold me.

  29. Way to go. Gladly pay a little more to Techsideline and cancel my Athletic subscription.

  30. Incredible add. Andy’s a great reporter and writer. Canceling Athletic subscription immediately.

  31. I decided to resubscribe after hearing Andy Bitter joined! Can’t wait to enjoy his articles in addition to the rest of a great staff.

    1. I’m going assume you’ve never seen his articles on the Athletic the last 5 years. He was voted Virginia Sports Writer of the year in 2022 for a reason. This is the Michael Vick of sportswriter recruiting. Nothing against the TSL team, but Andy is the best for reporting Hokie Football.

  32. My already high respect for TSL just went Platinum. Thank you TSL and Andy for this awesome alliance.

  33. I joined the Athletic because of Andy’s articles, and I left the Athletic and rejoined TSL (paid) last year. But I hated not being able to read Andy’s articles when I saw them in “Hokie News” links. Now he will be writing for TSL, and we can read the best of both worlds! Looking forward to reading his articles again.

  34. New Subscriber here – super excited for all of the Tech sports coverage and especially Andy’s addition to the team! Great portal pick-up!

  35. This is a “Swing for the Fences” move for TSL.

The ball is in the air and it’s going deep!! Will it be a home run? Triple off the wall? Or (very small chance) caught at the warning track? We’ll see. I like it, and hopefully all the subscribers will as well. It could be an excellent payoff in terms of excellent coverage and writing and financially for the site.

  36. Great addition ! I also cancelled my subscriptions to Rivals & The Athletic .. just don’t need them with TSL stepping up .

  37. Welcome aboard, Andy. I missed you when you joined the Athletic, and am thrilled to have your knowledge, expertise, and reporting back where I can access it!

  38. Awesome! Welcome Andy!

Will, what kind of NIL package did you put together to pull Andy off the portal?

  39. Will – Wonderful news. I do not post often but this is great. I cancelled my subscription to The Athletic when Andy announced he was no longer there, so happy to still read his work. The increase in subscription price to TSL is well worth it!!!

  40. in the words of elaine benes; “GET OUT!”…excellent pick up, can’t wait to read/hear his contributions…
