6-2, 185

Virginia Tech received another commitment on Saturday afternoon when Southern Nash (Bailey, NC) athlete Tralon Mitchell announced his decision. He is the 14th member of the 2023 recruiting class, the first from the state of North Carolina.

Mitchell is the fifth commit in as many days for Tech. Tavorian Copeland, Aycen Stevens, Caleb Woodson and Braylon Johnson – three linebackers and a defensive back – all chose the Hokies since Tuesday.

Mitchell ranks No. 26 in North Carolina by 247, and he chose the Hokies over East Carolina and Coastal Carolina. He also had interest from NC State and UNC. Most schools, including NC State and UNC, viewed him as a defensive back. However, he will begin his career as a running back for Brent Pry & Co., though he’s viewed as a prospect who could play other positions as well. He ran for 1,033 yards and averaged 10.1 yards per carry this past season, scoring 17 touchdowns in the process.

Virginia Tech now holds commitments from seven in-state players, while seven verbals have come from out-of-state. The Hokies have received a pledge from a player from Georgia, Indiana, Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and West Virginia.

Here’s the full list of 2023 commits for Virginia Tech football (14 total):

QB: 1 – Dylan Wittke
WR: 1 – Marcell Baylor
OL: 4 – Layth Ghannam, Hannes Hammer, Gabriel Arena, Lance Williams
EDGE: 1 – Jason Abbey
LB: 3 – Tavorian Copeland, Aycen Stevens, Caleb Woodson
DB: 1 – Braylon Johnson
ATH: 3 – Dante Lovett, Takye Heath, Tralon Mitchell

The Hokies have a chance to add to their out-of-state fold on Monday when South Carolina athlete Thomas Williams is set to announce his decision.

  1. Coach Pry was a graduate assistant for VT 1995-1997 under Bud Foster. For those younger posters that is what Beamer and Foster buttered their bread with. They would take two star and three star players and develop them into 4 or 5 star players. Many players over the history of VT football came as true walk-ons, not PWO’s and became stars. There are too many to list, but you will see the same type of development from our new coaching staff which have the potential to do the same. Fans get caught up on how many stars a player has. The bottom line is, many of those high star count players are a wash, head cases, or can’t play as a team member because they have always been the big fish, but now they are playing with all big fish! Heart and desire to be successful are the marks of most 2 or 3 star players. I would much rather have a player that has the fire to succeed and is a team player or a hot shot 4 or 5 star player that never amounts to much because it has been easy for them during their high school careers, but get lazy and live on their laurels which gets you nowhere. The future is bright for VT recruiting and it is just getting started. This new staff will be recruiting kids who are in middle school and following them up the ladder. The coaches will evaluate them, invite them to camps, and offer them if they have what it takes and are a good fit for the program overall.

  2. A way to get 4’s and possibly a 5 is to win and give the coaches a chance to coach up these 3’s and start winning. Patience….Patience!!

    1. Cotman isn’t a loss. He was his own hype man & spent more time hyping a few highlights than improving during his HS career

    2. We’ve been wondering how teams like CCU, App St, ECU get these speedsters; then we get one and our “fans” ask if he’s a “joke”? Give me a break

      1. No coaches are turning a class of all 3 stars into mega success, doesn’t matter who we have as a coach..sooner or later, we have to bring the talent…it only gets more difficult once the new car smell is gone. This kid could be a sleeper for sure, but heard for the last 6 yrs how we need to recruit better, maybe it is coming down the road.

    2. We have landed 5 in 5 days and likely a 6th on Monday.
If you want us to recruit any better players or 4-5* then you better pony up $$ to Commonwealth NIL

  3. I’m liking these 3 stars. On paper they are the players that good coaches desire to have on their roster.
