Virginia Tech picked up its 13th commitment of its 2023 class on Friday when Highland Springs (VA) defensive back Braylon Johnson announced his decision. He was one of the Hokies’ top defensive back targets of the 2023 recruiting cycle, and he’s the 13th commit of the class.

According to 247Sports and On3, Johnson is the No. 22 player in Virginia, while Rivals slots him at No. 12. He could potentially play either safety or cornerback for the Hokies, and he currently plays corner for the Springers.

The son of former Virginia Tech cornerback and current Highland Springs head coach Loren Johnson, the younger Johnson is the second Springer to commit to the Hokies this year, joining wide receiver Takye Heath.

Johnson took official visits to Virginia Tech and South Carolina, eventually picking the Hokies over the Gamecocks. He is also listed with offers from Boston College, Duke, Georgia Tech, Maryland, Michigan State, UNC, Oklahoma, Penn State, Pitt, Purdue, UVA, Wake Forest and West Virginia.

  1. Read in RT-D he has a 3.8 GPA and will have 62 credits entering college. His father thought he might go to Harvard or Yale and play Ivy League.

  2. I’m pretty happy to see this one come in. I’m haven’t followed recruiting much in the past few years, but this is an important get for us. He was already family, but I’m glad he’s playing for us!!!

  3. This is good to see Johnson headed this way and glad for his Dad but I am amazed that Big Boy HS football has such paltry crowds in the stands……plenty of good seats available. What ever happened to STANDING ROOM ONLY?

  4. Great to see Coach Johnson’s son coming to VT. That is an endorsement of VT by a successful, respected coach in the state of Virginia. Sure, he’s a former Hokie but first of all, he is a Father, and he wouldn’t let his son come to a school if he didn’t believe in the coaches.

  5. I am very excited about this kids commitment but isn’t he the one that made some kind of comment about ODU and didn’t sound high on VT?

  6. DBU…DBU…DBU…This is home. Another good player in the boat. Let’s Go…
