Stephen Gosnell
Transfer Wide Receiver
UNC
6-1, 205

Virginia Tech picked up a transfer commitment from UNC wide receiver Stephen Gosnell on Tuesday night. He becomes the second transfer wide receiver to commit to the Hokies, and the fourth transfer overall, joining Temple wide receiver Jadan Blue, and quarterbacks Grant Wells (Marshall) and Jason Brown (South Carolina).

Gosnell is the brother of 2022 tight end commit Benji Gosnell. He is originally a member of the 2020 recruiting class. He chose UNC over NC State, Appalachian State, Cincinnati and Wake Forest, among others. He was the No. 29 recruit in the state of North Carolina, though his family now resides in Virginia.

Gosnell will be classified as a true sophomore in 2022, and he still has a redshirt year available if needed. He appeared in seven games for the Tar Heels in 2021, catching two passes for 11 yards. All of his offensive snaps came as a slot receiver, though with his size (6-1, 205) he could also play on the outside.

  1. Well Chris, what’s your take on this fellow? Is it a good get or just a get? We all hope the guy will do well here. What do you think about him?

  2. Kid seems to find the seam, has a good cut step and finds the open field when running with the ball. Solid pick up.

    1. He looks semi-athletic and OK speed but I didn’t see any cuts or jukes or super athletic moves. This isn’t really the kind of guy you label as an “athlete” in football IMO. He’s just a solid looking football player that looks quicker against 1-AA competition which is fine, hope he helps our team!

  3. I wouldn’t read too much into him not playing too much as a frosh at UNC…I don’t know their roster but you would think with the way they’ve recruited last few years that they had more experienced players that were starting over him. His HS film looks pretty good, good size and decent speed.

  4. Caught 2 passes for 11 yards . Played mostly on special teams. Wonder what the coaches see in him ?

  5. why does first sentence of second paragraph still say benji gosnell a commit? shouldn’t he be a signee now? i thought he signed…

  6. Good size and looks to have good speed. His HS QB looked pretty good also. Wonder where he ended up.

    1. Agreed. but IMO its relatively easy to land transfer players. most of them are transferring bc they arent playing where they are currently. its TBD if any of these players are any good at the P5 level.

        1. +1. Yeah, Hendon Hooker is doing pretty well too. I don’t care if these guys rode some pine at Bama or the Va Beach YMCA Peewees, they *WANT* to be at VT now. That’s very, very important to their own motivation and future development. Get ’em in pads, in practice, on the field and see if they step up. Let’s go!!!!

Each transfer is different – with their own personal reasons. Reasons that the public may not be hearing the hidden truths. VT had has had quite a few of these.Yeah – former 4/5 star players are leaving Bama and UGa – who weren’t happy with their playing situation. Yet – an all-star QB just left UIW to follow his coach to Washington State.

The best transfer portal analogy I’ve heard is from a physics geek – it’s water seeking its own level. Hmmm.

      2. Yeah, yeah, sure understood. Just the clipboard has the priority list on it:

        1) No QBs check
        2) Nee WRs check

        What’s 3) Dline guys?

    2. Stephen Gosnell has virtually ZERO experience…who knows what kind of impact he will make for VT, and I hope it’s a LOT, but you’re way off here.
