Benji Gosnell Commits To Virginia Tech

Benji Gosnell
Tight End, Class of 2022
Carroll County High School, Hillsville, VA
6-5, 240

Virginia Tech secured a commitment from 2022 Carroll County High School (Hillsville, VA) tight end Benji Gosnell on Saturday afternoon, per 247Sports. He becomes the first commitment of the Brent Pry era.

Gosnell was committed to Ohio State until July when he reopened his recruitment. His brother plays for UNC, and he eventually chose the Hokies over the Tar Heels. He is originally from Pilot Mountain, NC, and he is also listed with offers from Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisville, Notre Dame, NC State, Penn State, Tennessee, and a few others.

Gosnell is a 4-star recruit by 247 and the No. 17 tight end in the country. He is rated as the No. 12 prospect in the state of Virginia.

Gosnell went down with a leg injury in Carroll County’s third game of the season, and his Hudl highlights show him as playing in just three games, so apparently the injury was significant. As of now, there is no word on when he’ll be 100% healthy again.

  1. He was as close to a silent commit as it gets under Fuente. He tore up his knee and with the coaching change, he kicked UNCs tires in hopes of finding a spot somewhere because he wasn’t sure his offer was good here anymore. Pry offered him a scholarship spot and he took it. Glad to have the kid. Talented for sure. Go Hokies.

    1. It all depends on how he recovers from the injury………..OSU may have dropped their offer anyway because he’s damaged goods.

I hope the kid does well!

  2. Carroll County has and has had a horrible football program for years. I wouldn’t get too excited just yet.

    1. I wouldn’t get too excited just yet.>>>>

So – a kid who is flipped from Ohio State and picks VT over UNC??? That’s excitement. But – the Schadenfreude Bardo is a dark place. So – that makes everything – wait n see?

In any case – the star rating system has become tarnished in recent years because fewer and fewer kids are playing football.

    2. Back in the 80’s there was a kid from Patrick County (not far from Carroll County), which had a horrible football program. He went to UNC, and then to the New England Patriots for several years.
Sometimes there are diamonds hiding in remote areas.

    3. Which has nothing to do with his ability, in fact he BY HIMSELF made them competitive in the games he played

  3. Too bad we don’t use Fullbacks or H back anymore. This kid has running talent to go with great size, going to be a nice dual purpose tight end for us.

      1. I was just going to ask..how does he know WHAT we use now! I am thrilled to get this dude!!

    1. You don’t know what we use now. That kid is a Foot. Ball. Play. Er. I don’t care what side of the ball he is on. In fact, I’m saying DL.

  4. Huge huge huge commitment. He’s a stud and so strong with speed and agility. Great way to start for coach Pry

  5. Gessh. Saw him playing TE, QB, and linebacker. He looks like a man among boys. For sure not playing in one of the toughest districts in Va. football? But I’m sure he wouldn’t have gotten an offer from OSU and all those P5 schools if he couldn’t play.

    1. Kinda had to laugh at that first play on Hudl, he must have weighed twice what that last pursuer weighed, like, what the heck are you going to do if you catch him? Not much.

    2. Neither did James Mitchell but I’m pretty sure he was one of our best players years. Guys from small schools can play just as well as those from larger schools. I hated when people act like that can’t .
