Virginia Tech wide receiver Tayvion Robinson announced on Thursday morning that he is entering the transfer portal.

Robinson, a junior who led the Hokies in receptions (44) and receiving touchdowns (5) in 2021, has two seasons of college eligibility remaining.

The former 4-star recruit caught 113 passes for 1,555 yards and nine touchdowns during his three-year career at Virginia Tech. He also averaged 11.1 yards per punt return, with one return going for a touchdown.

With fellow starter Tre Turner also departing (Turner announced that he will not play in the bowl game), Virginia Tech’s wide receiver room will look a lot different next season. There will be very little experience outside of Kaleb Smith, and the backups don’t have many reps under their belt.

Backup quarterback Knox Kadum also entered the transfer portal on Wednesday.

  1. Robinson is a good player. I’m glad Tre is gone. I never liked him because he made to many mistakes and missed games. Couldn’t depend on him. I never understand coaches playing guys they can’t win with.

    1. Doubt Turner sees an NFL snap outside of training camp or a practice squad – too soft, drops balls and doesn’t block well. Robinson is a smallish guy too that rarely fights for and comes up with balls. This is a bad move on both of their parts.

  2. .Just like JC said, “This is my home, This is my Team”.
    You’re either a Hokie or you’re Not A Hokie…..
If you are NOT, then pack your bags and go were ever, Down grade your status and go be a
BooWhoo, a Monnarch or a cheatin Flame!!!!……maybe they should not have been here to start!!!
As the song goes, “Another One Bites the Dust”

  3. Wish he would stick around, but you can’t blame him for wanting to finish out his last year with a more winning team to showcase his talents. We need to shop the portal and Lofton and Jones need to step up.

  4. So people complain that Fu couldn’t recruit and then when the players leave as a new coach comes in suddenly people complain they should stay? It seems like nothing but complaints. I will simply thank them for their contributions, wish them luck, and let the new coach recruit to his system. And that might include recruiting back the better players from the portal. Moriarity, why don’t you say something rightous or hopeful for a change?

    1. Fu COULDN’T recruit. One of the many reasons why he was relieved of his duties. He’s gone…let’s move on.

That said, I think transferring just because of a coaching change is a weak move. I wish Tayvion the best, but how do you just bolt after investing 3+ years at VT?

      1. Exactly – JF eliminated practically all coaching staff members with ties to local and State recruiting when he got here, and when he ran out of Frank’s players, IT COST HIM. And really what does the fact that JF couldn’t recruit have to do with Robinson leaving vis the TP??

    2. Well sadly he could not recruit. Turner and Robinson, can you name another receiver that Justin recruited that did much of anything? And he was only here six years. However you are correct, we should wish them well, thank them for their time and MoveOn. I don’t understand the logic at all behind what they’re doing but it’s their decision. I appreciate what they’ve done when wearing the Hokie uniform.

    1. Pretty sure you aren’t qualified to make that statement. But is very easy to do from behind a keyboard.

      1. Agreed, and those kind of comments just don’t belong. Robinson is the only recruit from the 757 took a chance with us and how many quarterbacks did he have to play with? Jackson, Willis, hooker, BB three, hooker again, Patterson, BB3 again,Knox. And he played hard for us. Here is a decision to make, and we don’t know it went into it. I think it’s a terrible mistake but it is to make

  5. Hope CBP has a good OC in mind and can make an announcement soon to counter recruit and portal loss. Naming an OC is more important then naming an DC IMHO.

  6. Entering the portal is not an automatic that he won’t be back. We seen that happen in the past and perhaps Pry can recruit him to stay. Maybe Tavion is waiting to see who the new OC will be and the type of offensive philosophy that will be featured in the new scheme. In addition, there is a possibility that other programs good QB’s who are locked on the bench sitting behind other talented undergraduate QB’s would consider coming here as they may see opportunities. Now with that said, I am still of the opinion that if BB can stay healthy, a good competent OC can bring more out of his talent. I think he has good skills and could be a good college QB. He has the heart, leadership skills, and some talent to work with. Towards the end of the season, it seemed to me that his passing game improved some. But of course, there is the injury risk associated with BB.

I do not believe that if Tavion has interests from programs like the ODUs / Liberty, he will make a move. Of course, we will all be sick if he ended up at UVA with Brennan Armstrong if he stayed another year and would feel equally nauseous if he’s at UNC, Pitt or GT. So, I am definitely hoping the best for him as long as he does not transfer to a program where he can hurt us next year, lol….

    1. I agree with most but I contend once in the portal you stay in the portal! I personally do not believe in bringing folks back once they make the decision to leave. causes nothing but trama and unret.

    2. Wrote a pretty lengthy ( for a football player) goodbye letter to the fans and program – doubt he comes back. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him wind up in S Florida at The U.

      1. I’m not so sure he could make the roster at the U. He’s very good but he’s been playing with us for three years. He’d be coming in freezing cold to a brand new system and assuming he’s gonna start right away? It’s not like that, I can’t see the Alabama‘s and Florida states of the world banging down his door. Like I said I wish him well but I think it’s a huge mistake.

  7. I agree TR is one of the best WR we have now but not one of the top 10 best I’ve seen at tech over the years. and then there were the fumbles. Anyway, I hope we start recruiting better but next year won’t be easy.

  8. Sure hope Pry is actively watching the portal for Oklahoma and ND players who are unhappy about their coaching changes. Never hurts to ask.

  9. You had to know this was going to happen. There will be more coming, and god only knows how many 2021 commits will be backing out of their tech decisions. For us, we had a very good class, but I shudder to think what it will look like after all this shakes out. 4 to 5 years till we see a good team, much less a coastal contender! OH well.

  10. Good luck to him unless he is wearing baby blue next year!

He gave all he had to this crap pile of an offense. If I were in his shoes I’d do the same. We have a TOTAL SCRAPE AND REBUILD on the offense. Our current QB can’t throw well (never has) no quality backups. No idea who is running the O show and are they going to pass more or even less, if that is possible.

    1. Mac Brown has made sure that they have plenty of quality receivers down there. He may get some time but he’d be splitting it with other good receivers. He’d be better off staying at VT and being the main guy.

  11. If he goes to a team we play – ACC or not – we will be sorry we let him get away. But, if he doesn’t want to be here…adios.

    1. If he goes to another ACC school, doesn’t he have to sit out a year of his two remaining years of eligibility?

    1. of course not…we are in the age of player entitlements. There are so many moving around the suits can’t even track them.

    2. Players can transfer or change teams at halftime these days. It’s gotten so absurd that I think the NFL needs to get involved. Kind of how baseball does it.

  12. I want him to stay, and believe he would have an even more prominent role in the offense next year. With that being said, Tayvion was a great Hokie, and I wish him all the best. Hope Hokie Nation gets to welcome him back with open arms if he decides to stay.

  13. This is very disappointing to me. He was my favorite player and I loved that he was from Va Beach.

  14. Fu and Corny and a rebuilding year now. I can see why. Not a high percentage passing team, lack of Fu developing QB’s, Corny using him on end sweeps, new coach coming in who is a defensive guy. Makes sense he’s exploring his options. Hope we can keep him though.

  15. The rumors I’m hearing is that he’s heading to another ACC team. Bummed he’s leaving.

    1. That would be a really bad kick in the teeth. Just another long list of four-star players blowing out of Dodge thanks to Justin. That man set recruiting back years at our school. And he was one of the only good ones we got out of the 757. Hopefully he may change his mind or go somewhere else.

      1. Don’t see how you blame Justin for this!!! Quit trying to blame the man for everything. There were clouds yesterday and I bet you think that was his fault also!

  16. Look, he is leaving for the same reasons that guys like Percy Harvin and Plaxico Burress never came here-we don’t throw the ball. It isn’t like he didn’t give it time, he has been here for 3 years.

The new HC is a defensive coordinator. He is exploring his options.
    .

  17. With Turner gone, he would likely have a bigger role in the offense and as a team leader. A lot of schools will have to shave rosters to get back down to 85 scholarships. There may not even be available space anywhere better than his situation at Tech. New coach needs to recruit him back onto the team.

  18. Quick. Cut an NIL deal for these (Tre) guys. I wish them well and appreciate their contributions.

  19. It is probably because our team did not pass the ball often enough. Receivers was to receive. He probably will leave for sure, especially after saying he will not play in a bowl game.

  20. I get that it’s a big question mark at QB but regardless you’re the top returning receiver on a Power 5 school and you’d be the #1 WR option next year….why the heck would you leave now?? Should be talking to Burmeister and convincing him to come back instead of jumping ship and starting all over…oh well!

    1. Yeah, that’s what is confusing to me. He would have had the lead role. Why not at least finish out the season and see what the new coach has to say.

  21. Maybe Pry can get the right OC onboard and convince TR to stay. I thought he’s been our best WR this year.

  22. These announcements are so stupid. Is there a form they all cut and paste from? Thank God, parents and coaches. Talk about developing as a man. And the start your last sentence with “With that said, I’m going to…blah blah blah”.

  23. What on earth is going on? Our leading receiver. Leader of the receiving corps? Transferring? I don’t get it.

  24. Boo! I will be curious where he ends up. One of my favorite current players. I wouldn’t be surprised if one of the power players like LSU, Auburn or the like reached out to some of our better players. Disappointing but, good luck to him and next man up.

    1. I’m sorry but he’s not gonna be getting any interest from those kind of schools. More like places like Rutgers, Duke, Texas Tech, Old Dominion, wake, etc. he’d be better served staying another year where he will be the man and getting his stats up. Having to go start over in a new system, I don’t know

      1. Probably this is a reason. Running the QB is not a winning strategy at VT. Passing and handing it off are. Need to change it back to winning strategy in the off-season.

    1. He’s got one year left and we are in a rebuilding mode without a proven QB on the roster…I wish he’d stay but he’s a dynamic athlete, a blow up year could earn him big dollars. Sucks but can’t exactly blame him…
