Virginia Tech Basketball Picks Up Commitment From Patrick Wessler

Patrick Wessler
Center, Class of 2022
Combine Academy, Charlotte, NC
7-0, 235

Virginia Tech picked up a commitment from 7-foot center prospect Patrick Wessler on Sunday.  He is the second verbal commitment of the 2022 recruiting class, joining guard MJ Collins.

Wessler plays for Combine Academy in Charlotte, NC.  He chose the Hokies over listed offers from NC State, Providence, Ole Miss, USC, Creighton, Iowa, Ohio State, Wake Forest, and others.  He is a rare  7-foot verbal for the Hokies.  As David Cunningham pointed out, 7-footers haven’t been common for Virginia Tech through the years.

The Hokies are still in search of another wing and a power forward to add to their 2022 class.

  1. OH MY GOODNESS
I dont think Hokie Nation realizes yet how much of a program changing player this young man can/will be for the Hokies. If we can keep him committed, he wont be here long. Athletic, High Ball IQ, Great Touch, Great Shot, ability to stretch outside range like Dirk/Luca/Kevin, and i bet hes probably automatic at the Charity stripe. Hes just about NBA G League ready now. He will get bigger and stronger and learn to play faster under CMY in the ACC. Wow…..play him now. We likely wont have him beyond 2 maybe 3 years.

  2. Good Hands for catching the ball cleanly – Excellent. Nice shot, can put the ball on the floor.

About 2% of the video was defense [three blocked shots]. Looks like a good get!

  3. The physical improvement between his freshman year and now is remarkable. He reminds me a bit of Luke Garza from Iowa.

  4. Between Wessler, Aluma, Ojiako and Lynn Kidd, I can’t remember a VT team ever having as much size in the low post as we’re going to have next year.

    1. Doubt he steps on the court this season. He needs some work against full grown men and a season learning Mike’s system. He backed up a superstar at COMBINE. Although pretty good body and moves for his size and age needs to build strength for inside play in ACC.

  5. Great news – seems like MY is on a roll. He has done a good job with the guys he inherited, I hope it gets better with “his” guys.

    1. It was said when MY was hired that he was more of an “old school” coach and places a premium on height. That certainly seems to be the case.

  6. Welcome Patrick! Good news on a Sunday afternoon with our bb program is a real plus. Welcome to the Hokie Nation!!!!!

    1. He backed up a much more polished player at COMBINE and they were deep and talented- beat Doorman by 20 plus points so I doubt his stats are very impressive.
