Virginia Tech picked up a commitment from 2022 placekicker John Love on Saturday. Love plays for Spartanburg High School in Spartanburg, SC.
It’s rare that the Hokies offer a scholarship to a kicker straight out of high school. Generally the Hokies, and most schools, will bring in kickers as walk-ons, and whoever wins the job earns the scholarship. In this case, Tech elected to offer Love directly out of high school.
The Hokies brought in punter Oscar Bradburn on scholarship in the 2017 class, but their last recruited scholarship kicker was Michael Santamaria in the 2014 class, though Santamaria never went on to claim the starting job.

Here is what he posted online about himself a year or two ago.
“I want to use football as an opportunity to get an education that will serve me throughout my life. I plan to major in chemistry and work towards a degree in medicine. My long-term goal is to specialize in infectious diseases. Lessons learned on the field will carry over into the classroom and the workplace. My commitment to improving my football skills and dedication to earning strong grades will make me an asset to my team and to my classmates and co-workers.”
Sounds OK to me! Just not certain how good a kicker he is. But the coaches like him so that is good enough for me.

The Kohl’s Kicking guys are legit so I trust what they have to say about him. They’ve done a bunch of camps at a soccer facility I run and always have top notch talent attending.
I’m in Greenville and my wife’s business is in Spartanburg next to Spartanburg High. I’ll try to see what the word on the street is. Maybe more than the two sentences above, maybe not. Greenville/Spartanburg has an elite soccer program. Wonder if J Lo played soccer? I’ll post on board if I find out anything accurate and worth posting. Thanks
