Virginia Tech running back Khalil Herbert was selected in the sixth round with the No. 217 overall pick by the Chicago Bears on Saturday afternoon.  He was the fourth and last Hokie taken in the 2021 NFL Draft.

After transferring from Kansas, Herbert had a dominant 2020 season for Virginia Tech.  He rushed for 1,183 yards on 155 carries, averaging 7.6 yards per carry.  He also caught 10 passes for 179 yards and a touchdown, while averaging 26.9 yards on 16 kickoff returns.

Herbert was Virginia Tech’s first 1,000 yard rusher since Travon McMillian in 2015, and the first back to go over 1,100 yards since David Wilson in 2011.

  1. I only wish we could have had him longer. He seemed to be a perfect Hokie fit. I will look forward to watching him on Sunday!

  2. Bear’s got a steal. He is much better than his draft position. I wonder how many RBs were selected before him? Khalil, thank you for help our Hokies last Fall.

  3. I’ll root for Khalil to do well against everyone but my Lions. I’m also ok with him personally doing well against my Lions but so long as the Bears still end up losing 🙂

    1. As one Lion fan to another, just root for Khalil to do well all the time, he should have a great game against the Lions, why not, everyone else does. How ’bout those Lions, never lost a Super Bowl!

  4. The Bears need lots of help at running back. They’ve got David Montgomery & Tarik Cohen. Cohen is coming off a 2020 season ending injury so Khalil should have plenty of opportunities to not only make the team but see significant playing time. Bears got a steal- I look forward to seeing him at Soldier Field! Congrats Khalil!

  5. 217th pick for a team in the frozen tundra or undrafted free agent choosing the team you want to try and make their roster, after examining their rb depth and evaluating your personal choice of which part of the country to start your career in.

Is an UDFA first contract lock-in the same number of years as a drafted player or less? Depending upon the quality of your agent, if you make a roster, he bonus could be higher.

  6. He was an exciting back to watch run. Thought he would go a lot sooner than the 6th round.

  7. I like this guy. Will be a team player and a contributor on special teams as well.

  8. There you go Khalil! Show the others what they missed out on! You made it! Nice work.

  9. Absolute steal in the 6th round…

Chip just got larger – watch him be a Pro-bowler in a few years!
