The #19/#16 ranked Virginia Tech softball team (23-6 overall, 16-6 ACC) won their sixth consecutive ACC series this weekend, winning three out of four games in Durham against the #12/#14 ranked Duke Blue Devils.  The Hokies won the first three games of the series 4-1, 7-3, 4-2 (8 innings) before dropping the Sunday game 3-1.

“We went into Durham this weekend and took 3-of-4 against the seventh-best RPI team in the country,” Coach Pete D’Amour said. “We’re disappointed that we didn’t take the fourth game, which speaks to the expectations we have of ourselves. Overall, it was a good weekend for us.”

The series started with a Friday night dual between two of the ACC’s strikeout leaders – the Hokies’ Keely Rochard and the Blue Devils’ Peyton St. George. The Hokies got RBIs from four different players and Rochard limited Duke to one run while striking out seven.

On Saturday, the Hokies swept the doubleheader from Duke as Rochard combined with freshmen pitchers Mackenzie Osborne and Ivy Rosenberry to limit the Blue Devils to a total of five runs in 15 innings, while the Hokies crossed the plate 11 times in the two games. The second Saturday game had great eighth inning fireworks as freshman Emma Ritter blasted a two-run home run and Rosenberry made it stand up in the bottom of the inning.  Although this Hokie team typically takes a “business-like” approach, excitement erupted in the eighth inning.

That set up Sunday’s finale with Hokie fans energized about the possibility of a series sweep.  However, it was not meant to be.  Rochard limited the Blue Devils to just three hits, but a couple of defensive miscues on Duke baserunners allowed the Blue Devils to plate three runs. The Hokies registered eight hits, but also left eight runners on base.

Rest assured that Coach D’Amour made a few entries on his famous note card.

“We had chances to win (Sunday) but couldn’t overcome some mental mistakes,” he said. “Those mistakes fall squarely on me, and we’ll address them.”

Nevertheless, there were plenty of positives for the Hokies to take from the weekend:

  • Keely Rochard struck out 21 batters in 20 innings of work. She now leads the ACC in Ks by 50+ over Valerie Cagle of Clemson.
  • Freshmen pitchers Obsorne and Rosenberry combined for a masterpiece in Saturday’s second game, limiting the Blue Devils to six hits and only one earned run without walking a single batter.
  • The Hokies registered 33 hits in the series by 11 different batters, and nine different players drove in runs. That performance occurred against one of the best pitching staffs in the conference.
  • Mackenzie Lawter was in a zone all weekend, going 6-for-12, scoring three runs, and blasting a double and her first home run of the year. For good measure, she also threw out a potential base stealer.
  • Kelsey Brown went 5-for-14 in spite of being called out of the box three times in the series by umpire Bill Gomoluch.
  • Addy Greene went 4-for-11, and Jayme Bailey, Cana Davis, and Emma Ritter had three hits apiece. As shown above, Ritter was the hero in Saturday’s Game Two with an eighth inning blast.
  • Grace Chavez went 2-for-2 as a pinch hitter.
  • By winning three of four from a team with a Top 10 RPI, the Hokies’ RPI will certainly increase, probably to Top 10 territory.

Although he certainly wanted the series sweep, D’Amour wasn’t critical of his team.

“Our pitching was lights out all weekend,” he said. “Keely was Keely and Ivy and Ozzy threw a great game (Saturday).  We hit the ball well all weekend and played above average defense. Once again, our ladies played hard, I don’t have a ton of negative things to say about our performance.”

The Hokies now return to Tech Softball Park for an 11-game home stand, starting with a Wednesday doubleheader against Longwood. Game times are set for 4:00 and 6:00 pm and the games are scheduled to be shown on ACCNX.

  1. Virginia Tech Softball Takes Three Of Four From Duke

And the one we lost was the one on ACCN.

    1. Thanks for ACCNX and Watch ESPN and replays I have seen all but a couple baseball/softball game this year games this year. The video portal has a 10 second quick forward which is perfect for baseball replays because you can skip 10/20 seconds between every pitch depending on pace of pitchers (great for Hokies baseball too). Between that and fast forward through commercials you can watch a game in half the time. It’s been awesome. I just don’t check scores.

  2. Chip, I assume it was the same ump who called Brown out of the box all 3 times.

Do you think the Dookies made it a point of emphasis pregame? Or am I just being paranoid.

    1. That’s an excellent question.

Supposedly, the out of the box call was going to be an emphasis this year, but it sure seems like Brownie is getting more than her fair share. I wouldn’t be totally shocked if the Duke coaches didn’t mention it at some point, but there’s no way to know for sure.

  3. And, they’re doing all this while Cam is out injured. All I heard was a lower body injury. Anyone know??

  4. This team has the potential of garnering the fan attention and enthusiasm of the Tincher era.

  5. Love the team and watching them …… Suggestion to ACCN – Don’t mic the benches. The high pitched chants and sreaming is unbearable ….. I watched the first three games on ACCNX and couldn’t hear the benches. Ended up turning off the Sunday game after two innings of hearing the benches above the announcers

  6. How good is FSU considering their wins are against the bottom half of the conference?

    1. I saw on ACCN after the Sunday game that FSU had something like an RPI of #4. That says to me that even though they’ve played the lower end ACC teams (except for vs VT), that their out of conference schedule must be pretty good, and they are 14-4 out of conference.

      1. I actually did a little research on the NCAA RPI site this week.

FSU has a non conference Strength of Schedule of 9 but an overall SOS of 37. That tells you their conference opponents were pretty weak. But out of conference, they have played Missouri twice, Florida twice, Auburn once, and Arizona three times. That’s really, really strong.

VT, on the other had, had a really week out-of-conference SOS of 174, but since the overall SOS is 27, must have played some really good ACC teams, whihc we know to be true.

Just win, baby, and everything will take care of itself.

  7. Heh, heh, Emma Ritter sent me a nice card for my donation, I can take credit for the two run homer right? ^)
