Marshall linebacker C.J. McCray, who has been in the transfer portal since February 25th, announced on Twitter this morning that he will transfer to Virginia Tech.

McCray, listed at 6-3, 215 coming out of Mallard Creek High School in Charlotte, North Carolina, is an outside linebacker who is expected to compete at the Backer spot, where Alan Tisdale currently holds the top spot on the depth chart. As a high schooler, McCray was a non-qualifier and was lightly recruited, with interest from Liberty, Coastal Carolina, North Carolina Central, and Marshall, where he eventually enrolled.

As a non-qualifier, McCray sat out the 2020 season and did not participate in any games. He is not listed on Marshall’s 2020 football roster.

McCray is enrolled at Marshall for the spring semester, per 247Sports.com, and will enroll at Virginia Tech in the summer.

Here’s a look at McCray’s high school film.

    1. Alright, I do have a question, he was a non-qualifier out of high school but, because he’s been enrolled at Marshall for a year and presumably has good enough grades that’s water over the dam/no longer an issue?

      1. I believe so. I think there was an exception if you went to Jr. College, but not a University.

    1. Yes. So Marshall enabled him to get on his feet academically, and now he can play the feetsball at VT.
