Virginia Tech’s running backs room has changed a lot since last season, with a new coach and several new players being added to the mix.  In terms of player losses, DeShawn McClease declared for the NFL Draft but went unsigned, while our long-held belief that Cole Beck would give up football to focus full-time on track finally became true.

New running backs coach Adam Lechtenberg was already in the Virginia Tech program as the tenth assistant coach, and he has coached running backs in the past, though at smaller schools.  Lechtenberg immediately brought in Kansas graduate transfer Khalil Herbert as well as Rutgers transfer Raheem Blackshear.  We know Herbert will be eligible to play this year; we’re still awaiting word whether or not Blackshear will get a waiver to play right away due to the coaching change at Rutgers.  I’d say that he’d be a shoe-in to get that waiver, but Brock Hoffman would probably disagree with me. Not to mention that Blackshear transferred in January, and there’s still no resolution to his elibility.
