Virginia Tech picked up a surprise commitment from Texas wide receiver Da’Wain Lofton on Thursday afternoon.  The 3-star receiver is the Hokies’ 16th commitment of the 2021 recruiting class.

Lofton is rated as the No. 49 athlete in the country by 247Sports.  He also held offers from Mississippi State, Penn State, Louisville, Colorado, and others.  He caught 55 passes for 1,216 yards and 15 touchdowns as a junior, and he also had 60 rushing attempts for 332 yards and another 13 touchdowns.

Lofton is expected to be a slot receiver for Virginia Tech, and he could also emerge as a candidate to returns kicks and punts.  He plays for North Side High School in Fort Worth, Texas.  The Hokies were the first school to offer way back on December 4, 2019.  There is a past connection, with Justin Fuente having coach Lofton’s high school coach at TCU.

  1. Ahhhhh……hello….this is very surprising….. this young man is from the same high school as 4/5 star Demetrius Davis who decommitted to Auburn. CC or TSL …..you guys must be trying to see who’s paying attention to your articles? This is a big get as obviously Lofton was responsible for Davis 2year 73 TD career. Could Davis still be in play?

    1. It’s not the same high school. DD went to a 6A school near Houston while this young man goes to a 5A school near Fort Worth.

      1. Darn, my apologies. You are totally correct- I see it now: North Shore Highschool vs
North Side Highschool…… Man that’s close
my eyes got the best of me. Thanks.

  2. Wow. That is a great highlight film. I see Eddie Royal. Very excited about this commitment.

  3. What I like is around the 7:20 mark he catches a TD and flips the ball to the ref. The ref drops it and the kid picks it up and hands it back to him. Did I mention his speed? Welcome home Da’wain!

    1. Yep, I noticed exact same thing. Small thing to notice but I think it speaks volumes about the young man!
Oh, did I mentioned his speed?.. Welcome home D’wain! Go Hokies!

      1. My thoughts exactly!! Watched the ACC championship (06?) game last night. Royal was great!! Has Royal’s speed and moves!!

      2. more Royal than Grimsley. speed near-like Bob Hayes: add Jafar coaching him up = lethal.

        1. If he’s the weight room warrior Royal was he will be special
Royal was bench pressing offensive linemen!!

  4. Good hands, good speed, determined runner. Look forward to seeing him making some big plays for the Hokies. Welcome, Da’Wain!
