Virginia Tech Beats No. 3 Michigan State In Maui

Virginia Tech
It was all fun and games for Virginia Tech against Michigan State.

Virginia Tech upset No. 3 Michigan State 71-66 in the opening round of the Maui Invitational on Monday night.  The Hokies improved to 6-0 to start the season, while the Spartans dropped to 3-2 after losing an earlier game this season to Kentucky.  Michigan State was ranked No. 1 in the preseason polls.

Mike Young’s Hokies used the same formula they used in their first five wins, playing tough defense and hammering the opposition with a barrage of three-pointers.  The Spartans committed 16 turnovers, some forced and others not, and shot only 24-of-59 (40.7%) from the field and 8-of-23 (34.8%) from the three-point line.  Meanwhile, Tech turned it over only nine times and shot 10-of-21 (47.6%) from three-point range.  The Hokies outscored Michigan State 20-4 in points off turnovers.

Redshirt freshman Landers Nolley scored 22 points for the Hokies, including a pair of huge shots down the stretch when Michigan State was threatening to claim control of the game.  Four other Hokies also scored in double figures: PJ Horne (12), Wabissa Bede (11), Nahiem Alleyne (10) and Hunter Cattoor (10).  Nolley and Bede combined for Virginia Tech’s last 17 points of the game.

The victory over Michigan State matches Virginia Tech’s best wins over a non-conference opponent, according to David Teel of the Newport News Daily Press.  They also beat No. 3 Vanderbilt in 1964, and No. 3 Kentucky in 1962.

Another key to Tech’s victory was the fact that they were able to slow the pace down and not let the Spartans get out in transition.  During free throw attempts, the Hokies often had all players with the exception of the free throw shooter on the defensive end of the court to prevent transition baskets.

“The pace was — the only chance we had, the only chance we had,” Mike Young said. “If the thing’s in the 80s, they would blow our doors off. Good pace for us, and I thought [it] went a long way in dictating that and not allowing them to move so fast in transition where they’re elite. I mean, they are really, really good. So hats off to my boys.”

This was a back-and-forth game with neither team leading by more than four points until the 6:01 mark of the second half when Hunter Cattoor nailed a three-pointer to put the Hokies up 54-49.  Cattoor’s shot was followed by a layup by Wabissa Bede and a three-pointer from Landers Nolley, and just like that Tech led 59-49 with 4:39 left to play.

At that point in the game Michigan State had been a turnover machine, but with a loss staring them in the faces they dialed in and made a game of it in the final minutes.  With two minutes left in the game, Aaron Henry hit a shot in the paint to cut Virginia Tech’s lead 63-61, and it appeared that the older, more experienced Spartans might come back to squeak out a win.

That’s when Landers Nolley hit back-to-back critical shots to re-establish control for his team.  First Nolley drove the lane and hit a tough shot between two Michigan State defenders that really impressed ESPN commentator Jay Bilas to put his team back up by four.  After a Michigan State three-pointer cut the Hokie lead to 65-64, Nolley responded with a clutch three-pointer of his own from the right wing to put Tech up 68-64 with 49 seconds remaining.

“It was a good play that Coach drew up and I just came off the screen, executed it, it felt good,” Nolley said.  “So they just believed in me and I took the shot, I hit it, we celebrated.”

Young deflected the praise back to his young redshirt freshman.

“I got nothing to do with it, come on,” Young said. “He was being kind. He’s a nice kid. That’s a really good player making a big-league play. We thought we could get him behind something, but really good players make really good plays.”

The Spartans did manage to cut the lead to two points on their next possession, but Wabissa Bede made enough free throws down the stretch for the Hokies to hold on.

As big as the season-opening win at Clemson was for the early stages of the Mike Young era, this victory over the preseason No. 1 team in the country now takes center stage.

“I’ve got good players,” Young said. “It comes back to good players. That guy down there (Horne) made at least two, maybe three first half threes. This young man is a special basketball player (Nolley), and an old grizzled veteran up there at the top of the floor that kind of keeps things settled for us, and that would be Wabissa Bede.”

Virginia Tech returns to action on Tuesday night when they face the Dayton Flyers, who hammered Georgia 80-61 on Monday afternoon.  Dayton is 4-0 on the season.  Tipoff is scheduled for 8pm, and the game will be televised by ESPN.

  1. My wife from Spartanburg knows Mike Y (not well) but knows Spartanburg we’ll. She says Mike is “liked by everyone “. I think this is an important plus for any coach

  2. This is insane. We lost out “big time” coach. We lost our scoring. We lost our recruits. We were supposed to be a doormat. We were prepared for years of rebuilding. Am I dreaming, or is CMY just the latest of Whit’s great hires?

    1. Buzz Williams did leave us a present though. Landers Nolley II. If he could have played on last year’s team … wow, what could have been.

      1. All credit to Landers for electing to stay at VT…..the place I hope he has come to know as “Home”

  3. Coach Young and this team – got to love what they have done to start the season which was going to be filled with a lot of question marks. Coaches and players are getting it done and admired by the fans. Keep up the good work!!!

  4. I enjoyed watching Seth Greenberg give Hokies lots of good press last night after the game. The best line was “at the end of the day, VT out-toughed MSU!” or something like that! Clearly CMY is off to a great start and has his players buying into his system and culture! This team should be fun to watch based on recent headlines with more highly ranked talent being sign up! Congratulations to CMY & rest of the team for awesome historic win!

  5. I was at the Vanderbilt game in ’64 with my Dad. I was 9 yo at the time. I believe that was the game where they squeezed 11,500 into what was then the Tech Coliseum and Fire Marshall said never again.

  6. Hats off to TSL for keeping pace with timely and exhaustive content to follow this awesome Hokie Sports run (FB, BB, Wrestling, Soccer etc..). What a great time to be a Hokie!

  7. I was a student at Tech the year we beat #3 Kentucky and three games later we beat #5 Mississippi State. Lee Melear, a starting guard on that team, was from Kentucky and had and outstanding game. He got his revenge because Coach Rupp did not recruit him.

  8. Didn’t we beat (upset)MSU at their place in an ACC/Big Ten challenge game fairly recently (recent being in the last ten or so years)?

    1. Nope, only ever played MSU once before this in 2013, and we lost. We did beat Michigan by 3 in Ann Arbor in 2016 though, maybe that’s what you’re thinking of?

  9. Those other wins over top 5 non conference teams were probably with upper classmen players. To have a team, made up of players playing to together for the first time, get this win; got to be a first.

    1. The 1964 team was Sophomores and Juniors ( Freshmen were not eligible). That was my Sophomore year. I think we played 2 Juniors (John Wetzel and John Whitesell) and 6 Sophomores.
I think we had 1 Senior (Micky McDade) The Sophomores plus the Freshman and the next recruiting class comprised our Elite 8 Team in 1966-67.

      1. Freshman were eligible
in 1972/1973 season…. We won NIT that season. Hokies beat four ranked teams: New Mexico, Fairfield, Alabama and Notre Dame. 😀 Go Hokies!

  10. Thanks for getting this out that quickly! Who would have expected this when Mike Young stepped off the plane in Blacksburg! What a gameplan and execution. They REALLY believe!

  11. Buzz who? It is amazing what Coach Young has accomplished. This team though undersized is tenacious on defense and well schooled discipline on offense. They play with hustle and heart and poise beyond their years. Barring injuries this team will have an impact on the ACC. Hokie Nation I believe we have found “the Coach” we need to take the VT basketball program to new heights. Right now our basketball program is on the rise.

    1. Couldn’t agree with you more vtbob1973 on all counts. It made me start thinking what if Whit had hired Mike Young back when he hired Buzz who? Oh well, I’ll take things exactly as they are today! Congrats to CMY and all of our bballers- you make us HOKIES proud!

      1. I think at the time Whit needed to make a splash to get fans back into the coliseum, things were kind of dire, Love him or hate him, Buzz delivered. Now, Whit can take a more measured approach with a guy like MY.

        1. Agree. Buzz was brilliant, a truly elite coach. He stopped the bleeding, and now MY looks like a fantastic hire.

If it works out that way, Whit will have the luxury and advantage of investing strategically in the program, with a long-term view. And that sure beats the season-to-season contortions of trying to keep Buzz in Blacksburg.

I think everyone wins in this scenario.

    2. Agree completely. Williams excelled at motivation but fell short at times on strategy and tactics. CMY always struck me in the past as a COACH, a guy with the whole tool bag. Now he’s our guy and he’s fielded a competitive team right out of the gate, much to the surprise of the prognosticators. And to quote my friend Patty, we no longer have to listen to Brent’s psycho-babble during media interviews.

  12. Chris…very impressive that you can provide an article this quickly. Great analysis, well done. Thanks to you, Will and the team for your hard work. Thanks Chris.

    1. I echo the appreciation – thank you Chris! As soon as the game was over, I couldn’t wait to read the analysis from TSL

  13. I would need to check but I believe we beat Memphis State at Cassell in the early 1970’s when MSU had Keith Lee and their dynamic team. I want to say they were ranked in the top 3..and maybe #1…that night. I was at the game as a kid and Cassell was bonkers. I stand to be corrected but I’m going to check and come back here shortly

      1. Yeah..I just checked..We beat then # 1 Memphis State at Cassell in Feb 1983..both schools were Metro as you said. Dell Curry was the star of that team but we had a good team.

        1. used to go to those games back then against Keith Lee and Memphis State but that was after 1983 when we knocked them off. I think it was 84 (my freshman year).. we had a great team – Curry, Beecher, Brink, etc. When VT scored 100 or more, whoppers were .99 at Burger King. That was a frequent hike to upper quad!

          1. We beat a top-ranked Memphis twice…1983 and 1985. The 83 team had the Youngs (Al and Perry), Dell, Keith Colbert and Bobby Beecher. The Youngs graduated in 84, but we still had Bobby, Dell, and Keith on the 85 team…and filled in with Roy Brow and Johnny Fort

      2. I know this game well!! I was lying in the infirmary w the flu and had to listen to how nuts things were in downtown Blacksburg!!!! I’ve been an AAU hoops coach for years and what I’m witnessing with new young players in this quick time frame is beyond impressive. Let’s make sure CMY isn’t poached!!

        1. Yep, I had to sleep outside Cassell in a tent in a cold rainy drizzle to to get tickets to that one. What a great win vs. Memphis St.

    1. Perhaps a little unprofessional, but we couldn’t quite find it in the budget to send Russian Hokie to Hawaii. He might not have come back.

    2. Same here, thanks for posting it, saw it earlier, but I got a kick out of it and good that TSL is having fun with it too.

  14. “This week will be brutal with basketball games and a Friday football game”. CC dreading this week…starting off well, maybe?😉

  15. Great performance. These guys looked very experienced. Defense was a key. A confident group. Congratulations – Go Hokies!!
