Virginia Tech set a school and ACC record with 21 three-pointers in a 100-64 rout of Delaware State on Wednesday night in Cassell Coliseum.  The Hokies improved to 5-0 overall with the win, while the Hornets dropped to 0-5.  Tech will now head to Hawaii where they’ll take part in the Maui Invitational.

The Hokies got off to a slow start, but once they got rolling the Hornets had no answer.  Four Tech players scored in double figures, led by freshman guard Nahiem Alleyne, who finished with a career-high 20 points.  Freshman Jalen Cone had a career-high 17, sophomore Isiah Wilkins had 15, while redshirt freshman Landers Nolley had 10.

Virginia Tech was 35-of-62 (56.5%) from the field and 21-of-37 (56.8%) from three-point range.  Alleyne drained a three-pointer with 3:53 remaining to help his team tie the school record of 18 three-pointers in a game, and then Wikins’ three-pointer with 2:21 left broke the record.  The Hokies went on to add two more three-pointers, including one final shot from Wilkins with 27 seconds left to put them at an even 100 points for the game.

“Let’s be honest, we are who we are,” Mike Young said after the game. “I wish I had two big ones down there that I could throw the ball down to. We don’t get fouled enough. We don’t have the opportunity to throw it down to the block and see how we play it. That’s how I’m most comfortable playing. Live by [the three], die by [the three], I’ve got no choice. It’s who we are. Thankfully, we have a number of kids that handle the ball pretty well and pass the ball pretty well. We have a number of them that can shoot.”

The previous record for three-pointers in a game was 18 last year against Central Connecticut State.  Tech’s 21 three-pointers was also an ACC record, breaking Florida State’s mark of 20 set way back in 2007 against Maine.

Junior point guard Wabissa Bede had 10 assists and no turnovers for the Hokies, while Wilkins has seven assists and no turnovers.  As a team, the Hokies had 29 assists with 11 turnovers.  Redshirt freshman guard Tyrece Radford continued his solid play with nine points and eight rebounds.

Bede in particular has impressed Mike Young.

“I don’t know that his court vision can improve, to be frank,” Young said. “He’s a young man that’s been around and has seen a number of plays. He knows how the thing is supposed to play out. He can see some things a step or two ahead of when they actually occur. He’s quicker, and the ball gets to where it needs to in a timely fashion. He’s playing great. Those are staggering numbers [40 assists, 8 turnovers for the season], but to be honest, I expected it out of him. He values the ball.”

Virginia Tech will now head to Hawaii for the Maui Invitational, where they’ll face No. 3 Michigan State on Monday at 5pm Eastern.  The game will be televised nationally by ESPN2.  The Hokies will also play on Tuesday and Wednesday, though opponents and game times are to be determined.

As well as the Hokies have played for such a young team through the first five games of the season, Young knows that Michigan State and the field in Maui will be an entirely new kind of challenge.

“They’re unlike anything we have played up until this point, but the time has come. The time has come to play somebody really, really good. It will test everything we’ve done with them through this point in the season.”

  1. Regarding game 2 I think these are the teams that will be the true litmus test for VT. I posted before the season started I think this team can win at least 7 games in the ACC and I think UGA and Dayton would be mid level ACC teams this year. Gonna be interesting

  2. Many pleasant surprises so far, but I am hopeful with Ojiako as a big man. Young and inexperienced but he looks athletic and while he’ll have his lunch handed to him some this year (especially when playing teams with multiple talented big men on the floor at the same time), I think he has a real upside.

  3. Good to see Wilkins kick it into gear. He had a good year last year and we will need him to be strong as we get into conference play.

  4. They are well coached for sure. Young and learning, couldn’t ask for more out of MY or his team. The future at VT under MY seems to be headed in the right direction. Whit made a wise choice.

    1. Way too early to make that determination. We just beat an 0-5 Del St, not an ACC win. The Clemson win was a surprise, but Maui will give some identication about this team. Everything is going pretty good so far, let’s keep on cranking out W’s.

      1. Disagree. Not too early to determine they are headed in the right direction. Are they going to get blown out of some ACC games? Probably. Will they finish above .500 ? Maybe. Most everyone knows this is going to be a really rough season, however don’t see how any coach could be doing much better to this point with what he has to work with than Coach Young. His recruiting, his hirings, his game management and especially his cooperation and courtesy toward the press proves that regardless of this years final record Whit got the right man.

        1. I have to agree with uber. I was as skeptical as anyone with the hire, but honestly, what more could ANY coach have done to this point? It may be too early to claim the hire was a complete success, but I think it is clear that we are heading in the right direction. All signs point to that so far….

      2. No it’s not. For goodness sakes the man is doing a great job and has the program headed in the right direction in all areas and especially in recruiting. But yet here comes the nay sayers. He was dealt a crappy situation and has not complained but instead got to work and as they say. He’s getting er done. No matter what happens the rest of this season. This young team missing bigs badly will fight and scratch to win each game and get better while doing so. Come on and just support the coach and his players who are doing their best and fighting hard to make VT proud.

      3. Absolutely not too early to say we are heading in the right direction. Look at the guys that just signed with us, not to mention we are 5-0 and shooting the lights out with a bunch of freshman. The future is clearly very bright. Maui isn’t going to tell us much, at least not against Michigan State. We aren’t expected to compete with a team/program like that right in this moment. If we do well then great, if we lose by 20, it means nothing. And by the way, identication is not a word.

  5. Excited for Maui to see how they do against better teams. I will be content with 1 win and being competitive in the other two games and elated with 2 wins.

    1. Yep. Most important game IMO is the 2nd one (likely vs loser of Dayton/UGA, don’t want to lose that and have to beat Chaminade to get our only W)

      1. You are right, Dayton or UGA similar to Clemson at this point. Ironically UGA beat Delaware St.100-66 almost the same exact score as our game with them.

    2. the way these young hokies can shoot the 3’s, i’d say they have a puncher’s chance against any of the big boys. 3’s are the greatest equalizer in college basketball…

  6. These guys pass the eye test. I know the competition hasn’t been very tough but for a bunch of freshmen and first time players play exceptionally well together. Tyrece is a revelation.
