This week’s Virginia Tech true freshman report takes a look at the freshmen who have seen the field for the Hokies, and also goes a bit in-depth about the defensive tackles and future redshirting possibilities.

Virginia Tech True Freshmen Who Have Played

Seven true freshmen have played a role for Virginia Tech this season, though I would expect to see that number rise against Rhode Island this weekend.

WR Tayvion Robinson: 7 special teams snaps, 170 offensive snaps, 177 total snaps.  Robinson has played in all five games, and he’s no longer eligible for a redshirt.  Like the rest of the wide receivers, his production could take a step back with Hendon Hooker at quarterback, but he’ll still be on the field a lot for the Hokies.  However, his snap count went from 43 against Duke to 25 against Miami.  Could the coaches be trying to get their best blockers on the field knowing they’ll be running more with Hooker behind center?

DT Mario Kendricks: 1 special teams snap, 101 defensive snaps, 102 total snaps.  Kendricks has played in all five games, which means he’s locked into playing the rest of the season.  At times he’s looked like Tech’s best defensive tackle, and at times he’s looked like a young player who would benefit from a redshirt.  He easily had his best game against an FBS opponent against Miami, with a PFF grade of 69.7.
