Though Virginia Tech played a large number of freshmen during Saturday’s game at Boston College, only five of them were true freshmen.  NCAA rules permit a player to play in up to four games and still take a redshirt year, so technically all of Tech’s freshmen are still eligible for a redshirt.  However, it appears that four of them are set for major roles in 2019.  That number could expand, but we won’t know until later in the season.

This season we’ll be bringing you a weekly update on the progress of Virginia Tech’s true freshmen and their redshirt status.  We’ll get started with the five guys who played a role at Boston College.

Those Who Have Played

Four true freshmen played major roles against the Eagles, and a fifth played a few snaps on special teams.  Here’s how it broke down (snap totals from Pro Football Focus):

WR Tayvion Robinson: 6 special teams snaps, 43 offensive snaps, 49 total snaps.  Robinson actually started the game in the slot for the Hokies, and led Tech in receptions with seven.  He scored his first collegiate touchdown.  He’ll play a major role for the Hokies this season.
