The end of the recruiting road is in sight for Shelbyville (Tenn.) three-star defensive tackle Gary Smith III. Now at one of his final steps before he’s ready to make a decision, Smith is down to a top three.

Virginia Tech, Duke and Vanderbilt are now the last schools standing, and Smith is trying to see each officially to get to a decision. In July, he set Aug. 6 as his decision date, but that might have been a bit premature. Smith’s cousin, five-star shooting guard Keon Johnson, committed to Tennessee on that date.

“Part of it was Keon, and I just wasn’t ready at the time,” Smith said of his postponement. “I knew Keon was going to commit. We were going to do it together, I just wasn’t ready. Once we got closer to it, to the date, I told him I was going to commit Aug. 6 if I was ready, if I knew for sure. But I didn’t know for sure, so I’ve got to wait.”
