August 6 is a day that has plenty of meaning for Shelbyville (TN) three-star defensive tackle Gary Smith III. For the most part, it’s been a day that carries negative connotation.

That was the day, when Smith was four, that his then three-year-old cousin was killed in a car accident. But with a top five of Virginia Tech, Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, Duke and Florida State, he hopes to change that day’s meaning. That’s when Smith is planning to make his college commitment.

“If I’m ready then, I’m going to be ready,” Smith said. “It’s special to me. I want to do that for him, so it’s a day I’ll be able to remember in a good way, instead of a bad way.”
