Multiple media outlets are reporting that rising junior cornerback Bryce Watts has entered the transfer portal.  The news was first reported by Andy Bitter of The Athletic.

(Update: Watts later tweeted out his decision to enter the portal.)

Watts started 12 games for Virginia Tech last season, making 24 tackles.  He also had one interception late in the season against Marshall.

Watts announced on Twitter back in March that his girlfriend is expecting a child, and it is thought that this is the reason for his transfer.  He is a New Jersey native who was originally committed to Rutgers out of high school.

Virginia Tech has numerous players who are expected to challenge for Watts’ vacant starting position, including senior Jovonn Quillen, redshirt junior Jeremy Webb, sophomore Jermaine Waller, redshirt freshman Armani Chatman and redshirt freshman Nadir Thompson.

  1. Good Luck Mr. Watts. You are doing the right thing and you will be missed. Don’t forget, Once a Hokie, Always a Hokie.

  2. His girlfriend attends Virginia tech, I’m pretty sure. If anything it bodes well for development of our younger corners I hope.

    1. Read the article in Roanoke Times and get back to me.

Watts’ leaving is nothing, and I mean nothing, like any other Portal entry. He was glowing in his admiration of the current staff, and VT football. He mentioned the decision to leave was harder for him than his original decision to come to VT from New Jersey. It’s an unfortunate, but not unusual sitution he finds himself in.

His girl friend is expecting. As I read everything, he’s going back to NJ because of his built in support system there, ie grandparents, etc.

  3. Good Luck Bryce – if the reason is family you are setting priorities correctly!

Always a Hokie – come back and visit later in life!

    1. Amen. His life and families well being are more important than playing CB at VT. Next man up. That’s why you recruit for depth.
