Virginia Tech’s New “Baller” Explains His Decision

Last year, while watching the HBO series Ballers, Maury (Va.) three-star running back CJ Beasley figured out what he wanted to do for a living one day. He’d long been drawn to numbers, the idea of being an accountant. But now, Beasley decided he wanted specifically to be like Dwayne Johnson’s character, Spencer Strasmore: an entertainment accountant.

On Friday, Beasley decided he’s taking his ‘baller’ aspirations to Virginia Tech, when he announced his commitment. But already, Beasley has something in common with Strasmore. In the show, Strasmore feels like he has something to prove in his post-football career. Now Beasley feels the same, albeit for a different reason.

“During the recruitment process, there’s been a lot of colleges that said they liked my film, but I’m too small,” Beasley said. “I’ve heard that a lot. I’m glad Virginia Tech took a chance and made an offer. That’s what else hit me. They were the first to ever give me a chance. They believe I can get to that size and do what I need to do. Every time I go against a team that told me I was too small, I’m going to dominate. I just feel like I have something to prove.”
