Virginia Tech men’s basketball picked up a graduate transfer commitment from 6-8 center Branden Johnson of Alabama State.
Thank you Alabama State for the opportunity and a lifetime of lessons. Montgomery will always have a special place in my heart. I’m ready to represent Virginia Tech in the next chapter of my life! #MyAsu #ThisIsHome #StoneByStone #Hokies pic.twitter.com/Ux2SPp3zE1

Johnson averaged 4.3 points and 3.7 rebounds in 2018-19. In 2017-18, he averaged 7.7 points and 6.8 rebounds. He shoots 63.3% from the field for his career, though he’s just a 37.6% free throw shooter, and he’s never made a three-pointer. He is 6-8, though he only weighs 205.
Johnson will be eligible right away, and he’ll have one year of eligibility remaining. With his commitment, the Virginia Tech roster now looks like this…
C Kerry Blackshear, r-Sr. (Transfer portal)
C Branden Johnson, r-Sr.
G Wabissa Bede, Jr. (recently removed his name from the transfer portal)
F PJ Horne, Jr.
F Keve Aluma, Jr. (Wofford transfer, must sit out in 2019-20)
G Isaiah Wilkins, So.
G Jonathan Kabongo, So.
F/G Landers Nolley, r-Fr.
G Hunter Cattoor, Fr.
G Jalen Cone, Fr.
Mike Young will continue to battle to bring in more players for this season, though it remains to be seen who he will be able to land with limited official visits at his disposal.
The dude really likes his Montgomeries!
6’8” & 205, get him in the dinning hall stat. Given how tall & thin he is I’d say every pound he can gain will make him a better player. The plus is we’re gonna get his best year of college because he’s still filling out. Welcome to VT!
Is this our 2019 version of keith Colbert (yea early 80s hokie). Keep rebounding feed Dell. Whoops where is Dell. Or who is our Dell curry on this team?
Welcome Mr. Johnson! I hope you have a fantastic season!
Well at least he can say he already has a victory in the Cassell.
Let’s hope he doesn’t get fouled on his layups and dunks. 37.5 percent foul shooting is abysmal
Why did his production get cut in half?
maybe he is here just to absorb the fouls…i don’t see much hope in the acc for this kid when he could only manage those stats at a low major.
I’m guessing same reason Devon Wilson’s did. Better players added.
OK, maybe Will was right, they only have one jersey big enough for guys over 6’8″ #24!
So two more takes, which would leave 3 schollies for next year?
er, one more take?
Johnson will be a r-Jr.
I think you’re note next to Wilkins was meant for Bede
