The Virginia Tech men’s track and field team won the 2019 ACC outdoor championship, scoring 123 points to edge out host Virginia (117 points) in rainy conditions in Charlottesville. Here are the final scores:
The Virginia Tech women finished fourth with 77 points, behind Florida State (134), Miami (92.5), and Virginia (84).
Men’s Track and Field Title Results
The men’s title is Virginia Tech’s fourth ACC outdoor championship (2012, 2016, 2017, and 2019), with three of them coming in the last four years. The Hokies completed a sweep of the indoor and outdoor men’s titles, tying for the indoor title with Florida State back in February.
Freshman Jacory Patterson was the big star, winning the 400 meters (45.60 seconds), placing second in the 200 meters (20.77), and running on 4×100 and 4×400 teams that finished second and fourth, respectively. Bashir Mosavel-Lo came in first in the 800 meters (1:49.90) and also ran on the 4×400 squad. Miles Green was first in the 400-meter hurdles and competed on the 4×400 team as well.
Other Virginia Tech winners were Fitsum Seyoum (3000M steeplechase), Deakin Volz (pole vault), and Jaelyn Demory (decathlon).
Like Patterson, Green is a freshman, and Mosavel-Lo is just a sophomore. Another freshman, Cole Beck (a familiar name to Hokie football fans), finished fourth in the 100 meters and ran on the 4×100 relay team. Beck was competitive in the 200 meters as well, coming in fifth in the preliminaries with a time of 20.98. Sadly, Beck false started in the finals and was disqualified. His prelim time of 20.98 would have finished fifth in the finals, as well.
Seyoum and Demory are redshirt sophomores, and Volz is a senior.

Thanks for the write-up Will, and the shout out to Ben. He was disappointed to not score and felt that he let his team down on Friday night, but was very happy in the downpour on Saturday afternoon, as was the entire team. Great group of guys that overcame some bad luck with some of their own good luck and inspired performances. Jacory, Miles, and Bashir’s races on Saturday were a great combination of talent and sheer want-to.
One thing to note – for track and field, there are two seasons – indoor and outdoor, and for distance runners, there is the additional cross country season. An athlete can redshirt any of those seasons while competing in the others. So it becomes difficult to keep track of what year they are. From looking at the results, I know that some of the years are wrong for outdoor season (may have been carried over from indoor season). Many times, VT will redshirt freshman runners for XC and indoor, then they run attached in the outdoor season. But this is still a very young team that should be in good shape for the immediate future. Go Hokies!!!

Should be noted the 4×100 team set a school record with 2 Freshmen (Jacory Patterson & Beck)
Plus two juniors (Michael Davenport and Joseph Tay), so the entire relay team is coming back next year, as is the 4×400 team.
