Virginia Tech men’s basketball received the first verbal commitment of the Mike Young era on Saturday when 2019 guard Hunter Cattoor verballed to the Hokies.  Cattoor had previously signed with Young at Wofford.

Cattoor is from Orlando, FL where he attended Bishop Moore High School.  He held a large number of scholarship offers from low-major programs such as Wofford, Belmont, Bucknell, Bradley, etc.  He also held a mid-major offer from hometown UCF, and other mid-major offers from programs such as FAU and UNC-Wilmington.

Cattoor is a 6-3 guard who can play the point but is considered a combo guard.  He averaged 18.9 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 3.2 steals last season as a senior.  Cattoor shot 47% from the field and 38% from 3-point range as a junior.

With Cattoor’s commitment, Virginia Tech’s 2019-20 basketball roster now looks like this…

F Kerry Blackshear, r-Sr. (Transfer portal)
G Wabissa Bede, Jr. (Transfer portal)
F PJ Horne, Jr.
G Isaiah Wilkins, So.
G Jonathan Kabongo, So.
G/F Landers Nolley, r-Fr.
G Hunter Cattoor, Fr.
F Emanuel Miller, Fr.

We’ll have more on Virginia Tech’s potential recruiting targets in an article early this week.

  1. How about the Gate City kid who committed to Wofford (Zak Ervin I think). 6 ft 5 in, great shot, VT grade for parents.

  2. Welcome!

MY needs to fill this roster with “his” guys. Whatever that means we will find out. But until our roster is FULL of HIS guys, no complaints here!

Ditto to CJF. Give it time, we shall see

    1. Probably good enough to provide some depth. Right now we need some people that can provide some minutes off the bench. And it’s not like we’re overflowing with high-level ACC quality players as it is. This rebuild is going to take some time. And a couple of mid-level recruits to fill spots during practice, and play a few minutes in relief when needed is to be expected as we build up the roster. Same happened when Buzz came aboard. If the recruit turns out to be better than expected, then that’s just a bonus.

      1. He’s also a Coach Young “system” type guy. Might as well start the team conversion now. The more playing in Coach Young’s system, the quicker all the players will know it and then we’ll know if it pans out in the ACC.

    2. At this point, even if he’s not, he’s a warm body, and I think we need that to fill out the roster. Hopefully not the last announcement we have on kids who will commit or transfer to here.

    1. Non scholarship player. When we talk about rosters, we typically only include scholarship players, because walk-ons come and go so often. The exceptions are when a walk-on, such as Sam Rogers on the football team, receives extensive playing time.

      1. And didn’t Sam get a scholarship as soon as he made the two deep, which, IIRC, was his freshman year?

  3. Chris… your quote “He averaged 14 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.5 steals last season as a junior.” ” Cattoor shot 47% from the field and 38% from 3-point range as a junior.”

What were his stats as a senior?

  4. Did I miss Emanual Miller changing his status? Last I saw he was still a commit.
