Spring practice is set to begin at Virginia Tech in less than a week, on Sunday, March 3.  The Hokies have a number of early enrollees for the 2019 recruiting class who will be eligible to participate when practice opens on Sunday.

DT DaShawn Crawford: The JUCO prospect from Jones County Community College in Mississippi is expected to contribute heavily up front in 2019.  Enrolling early should give him an even greater chance to crack the starting lineup right away.

WR Elijah Bowick: The outside receiver from Charlotte could have a chance to contribute immediately with the departure of Eric Kumah.  Bowick had a big offer list, and enrolling early will help him get a leg up on his fellow freshman receivers.

OL Jesse Hanson: Hanson is from nearby Lord Botetourt High School in Daleville, VA.  He is expected to play offensive guard for the Hokies.

DB Nyquee Hawkins: A defensive back from New Jersey, Hawkins could potentially play cornerback or safety for Virginia Tech.

DB Brion Murray: Murray is originally from Delaware, but he played JUCO ball at Coffeyville Community College in Kansas.  He redshirted his first year, and will be a redshirt sophomore for the Hokies this season.  He could potentially play cornerback or whip, though he mentioned during his recruitment that he was being recruited for the whip spot.

DB JR Walker: Walker is a Raleigh native who picked Virginia Tech over NC State.  He will play somewhere in the secondary for Tech, and we’ll have a better idea of his best fit after the conclusion of spring practice.

Virginia Tech’s first media session of the spring is this Thursday, February 28, at 11am.  Spring practice will be interrupted by Virginia Tech’s Spring Break between March 9 and March 17, but will resume when the break has ended.  The annual Spring Game will be held in Lane Stadium on Saturday, April 13.  Kickoff time is 4pm.

  1. I think that if he proves he can cover and TACKLE to the ground our running backs he plays first year- any position outside of the two linebackers.

  2. Is it normal for spring practice to be interrupted by Spring Break?

Is that a good or a bad thing? Practice 7 or so times, go away for a week, then practice another (guessing) 14 times? It could make some players lose focus, but COULD allow others to study the playbook more and even get a lot more “Voluntary” workouts in.

    1. It isn’t normal for Tech, but I don’t know how other schools do it. Spring practice consists of 15 practices, and that includes the Spring Game. I don’t really view it as a good thing or a bad thing.

  3. thanks for the early enrollee list.

does the staff publish a full line-up of signees, walk-ons, preferred walk-ons, along with transfers? anytime soon?
the walk-ons and preferred’s names have usually been discreet to back-channel. and as some have already asked for an official or verified list, i would like to add my name; and request some background on their position, character, home town/school, measurables, and football history.

    thanks. Go Hokies!

    1. Not impossible, but I’m not going to make that prediction until I know what position he’s going to play.
