One of the neat things about watching sports is that you never know when you’re going to sit down for a game and see history being made.

I remember where I was and who I was with when the ball rolled through Bill Buckner’s legs, and when Kirk Gibson hit his home run on one good leg. I’ll bet the fans who saw Wilt Chamberlain score 100 points will never forget it. Buster Douglas’s defeat of Mike Tyson came out of nowhere. On the dark side, no one knew the 2001 Daytona 500 would be Dale Earnhardt’s last race, or that a 1991 NFL playoff game between the Raiders and Bengals would be the day Bo Jackson suffered the hip injury that ended his career.

Those events are all ESPN 30 for 30 material. They’ve either been documented by that series, or could be some day.

It’s unlikely that they’ll ever make an ESPN documentary on Virginia Tech’s 47-24 win over NC State. It will be a footnote to history that very few people outside of the two schools’ players, coaches and fan bases will remember, but that doesn’t make it any less remarkable.
