Hendon Hooker To Enter The Transfer Portal

Virginia Tech quarterback Hendon Hooker announced on Wednesday afternoon that he will enter his name in the transfer portal and explore his potential options.

Hooker, from Greensboro, NC, appeared in six games for Virginia Tech this past season as a redshirt freshman.  He had four carries for 57 yards and a touchdown.  That included a 69-yard touchdown run in the second game of the season against William & Mary.  He did not attempt a pass.

If Hooker finds a new home through the transfer portal, the Hokies will have just two remaining scholarship quarterbacks – Ryan Willis and Quincy Patterson.  It’s possible that the Tech coaching staff will bring in another quarterback between now and August.

  1. And then there were two. Wow. I’m sorry guys. I’m having a real hard time looking at all these portal transfers and waving them off as inconsequential: he’d never start, he graduated already, he didn’t fit the mold, he wasn’t a Fuente guy, he wasn’t a major contributor, yada, yada. I hate seeing ANYONE leave voluntarily before their time is up. Either we screwed up by bringing them in when they didn’t fit, or we failed to get them in a position to succeed. Either way it paints an ugly picture about VT being a program where many players seem eager to leave rather than stick around. I just can’t buy the “he was too far down the depth chart” stuff anymore. It makes a reassuring story but aren’t we just whistling past the graveyard a bit much? Any player on the roster is only 1 or 2 injuries away from being placed into a starting role – as we have learned all too well the past few years. And if they are unfit for being a starter then coach em up or stop recruiting kids who will never fit. Hooker was obviously talented. Shame to see him go.

    1. I think it was just over recruiting a position (QB, WR, _____) But if those are all guys that sign on the dotted line and the other positions are lean….ah…whatever, I have no idea.

  2. No big surprise there. I thought that he’d be one of the first to enter the transfer portal. All I can do is wish the young man the best.

  3. Really hoped this young man was able to get on the field more. Saw him in NC and really felt he would be something in Coach Fuente’s offense. Wish him nothing but the best as he’s a good one that didn’t work out.

    Let’s Go…Hokies!!!

  4. Best of luck to Hendon.

But why did you pick the picture where he appears to be pooping something large and orange?

  6. QB is the one position that is basically all or nothing so I can’t fault for him wanting to find a place he can see the field.

And for those who are concerned you better get used to it. The days of having 3 guys on a team that are legit starting caliber are O-V-E-R. In fact, you’ll be lucky if you can hold on to two.

    1. That said, those that transfer will likely be stepping down a level of team quality. Not always, and not always a bad move, but they often will also quite possibly end up with a lower supporting cast.

    2. 95% of all D1 teams don’t have 3 legit starting caliber QB’s today. 95% of all D1 teams have a starter, at least one “capable” backup and a designated QB who would be third in line if the other two were injured, etc. That’s not going to change. Fuente will have another guy on the team who will be the scout team QB before Fall camp. Book it. Nothing new about this process and it’s not going to change. The portal change will/may make it harder for most teams to stay on top of this, but everyone will HAVE to adjust to remain viable on offense.

  7. I expected this. Hooker was not given much of an opportunity to show what he could do last Fall. Patterson’s minutes were just for a run, let’s hope he can pass the ball. Best Wishes to Hooker..

    1. If it comes to that level of emergency, perhaps. First choice is probably to find a transfer of our own.

      1. We would be better off with a freshman IMHO, if there is a good one left, with a Senior and R-F in the system.

        1. I agree with that. Put some separation between QP and another quality QB. I really don’t blame HH for wanting to try his luck somewhere else.

    2. He’d likely be option 3 at this point, ala Nick Sorensen ’98. Speaking of Sorensen, who knew he was the Seahawks secondary coach?

      1. Nick Sorensen was the ultimate utility and team player. At Tech he was QB, Linebacker, and Safety. In Jacksonville, the special teams captain. Now a secondary coach in Seattle. Young players should look to his work and determination as an example of why not to quit or bail out.

          1. you’re dating yourself with that Iavaroni comment!

FYI – did you know he was a high school teammate of Seth Greenberg?

        1. I agree but is this coaching staff giving guys that opportunity. I hate to see him go because I know he is a great athlete.
