If you looked at some basic stats, you wouldn’t know that Virginia Tech’s wide receiver group was deeper and better in 2018 than they were in 2017.

2017: Eight different receivers caught 192 passes.
2018: Six different receivers caught 180 passes.

But when you dig deeper, and you use your own eyes as a judge, you know that Virginia Tech’s 2018 receivers were much more impressive than the 2017 group. In 2017, once you got beyond Cam Phillips, the Hokies just didn’t have much.  Case in point: true freshman Sean Savoy was the second leading receiver in 2017 with 39 catches.  In 2018, he caught just 18 passes and left the team before the season was over.

Several things happened for this group to improve from last year despite losing their best player to the Buffalo Bills…
