Virginia Tech Adds Rhode Island To 2019 Football Schedule

Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech has added FCS opponent Rhode Island as a home game to replace the road game at East Carolina in 2019.  The Hokies will face the Rams in Lane Stadium on October 12.  This will be the second meeting between the two schools, with Tech winning 34-7 back in 1980.

Rhode Island went 6-5 in 2018, with a 4-4 record in the Colonial Athletic Association.  However, over the past five years, their overall record is only 13-43 under head coach Jim Fleming.

Season tickets will cost $400 per ticket, which is the same price as the 2018 season.  Every season ticket purchased will also include a $25 concessions voucher.  The full schedule, with dates included, is expected to be released by the ACC by the end of January.  The Hokies will host Duke, North Carolina, Pitt and Wake Forest as part of their conference schedule.

The deadline to renew your season tickets is February 15, 2019.  The deadline day to make your Hokie Scholarship Fund donation is March 31, 2019.  Seat selection for the 2019 season begins in April, for fans who are interested in exploring other options based on available seating locations.

The Hokies will also host Furman and Old Dominion as part of their non-conference home slate.  The athletic department released a picture showing their future schedules, and it appears that the Furman game has been moved to September 21.  If that’s the case, then the Hokies will open the season with an ACC opponent.

  1. Possibly a stupid question, but… URI and Furman are both FCS, right? Would that mean one of those (hopefully) wins wouldn’t count toward bowl eligibility? Or has that changed in recent years?

  2. I wonder how much season ticket sales will crash? With the off season, bad home schedule, and general trend of attendance in sports, it could be a lot.

    1. Hmm, that’s a darn good question. In the past, that has been the ODU slot, but that ODU slot has been moved to 9/3 from 9/10.

I think the 9/10 date for the BC game is a cut and paste error. I don’t think it belongs there.

  3. nice “variety” of acc foes (tic): we play the deacs, loserville (away), klempsun (away), ‘cuse, free shoes, and puppypack (also away) . . . ONLY ONCE EACH in the 13 years covered by your graphic schedule. are they in the acc? or maybe we aren’t? granted the crossovers aren’t designated for 2025 – 2031.
    as compared to, we play: uterps – 4; the state pen – 2; rutsger – 2; az.cats – 2; wisky-onsin – 2; mormon young – 2; and dreaded ecu – 3 (if they don’t cancel).

mixed, mostly good news: we’re not in the acc championship game in 2019 and 2021, but our fortunes are good in 2020 and 2022 – 2031. appearing in 11 out of the next 13 acc championships = we’re moving in the right direction! (i wonder if vegas knows this,?)

    Go Hokies!

  4. I hate opening w an ACC game again. It better not be at Miami, not on 8/31. That would be cruel and unusual punishment. I also hope it isn’t a Labor Day night game. Not thinking it will be, since that is supposed to be for premier teams/matchups.

    1. Won’t be Miami – they’re scheduled to play Florida on 8/31. Looks like there are three ACC opponents with an open date that weekend: Pitt, BC, and UVA.

  5. Duke UNC, Wake & Pitt likely will all be bowl teams in 2019. People don’t think schedule sounds good but UNC has talent & was young plus they’ll have a smarter coaching staff & other 3 were all in bowls this year

    1. They might be good on the field, but they are most assuredly not sexy names in the box office. A down Miami team is a bigger draw than a decent Dook squad.

  6. I think you meant to just say “Season tickets will cost $400” and not “per ticket”
